True initially.
First PF album MOMENTARY LAPSE. FAV: ANIMALS/WALL. And I heard DSOTM before Animals, I think.
YES.... I went for....... The Yes Album First? Maybe my favorite, I like Relayer a lot too, and 90125.
Genesis: Went at .... Abacab and Lamb Lies Down (Lamb Lies First I think, formally speaking)? It was virtually all simultaneous. Lamb Lies Favorite.
Rush > 2112.... but then I believe that was after a greatest hits or two. I like 2112 the best.
The Beatles --- had 1 first, first album was White Album, that's my favorite.
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ this is all in my youth, I mean, I was very very young.
For modern band searching, I have access to all of their output at once generally, and can pick the best reputed one to go first, or fly through them until I find one I instantly like. So its not usually true, or at least isn't worth mentioning, if the effect exists.

It is possible, that in most causes somebody meets new (for him personally new) group not randomly, but after recommendation from somebody other. And he select album, which is atractive for him by his assumption. Maybe it is part of mechanism, why first hearded album is feeled best, most typical for group ehich is accepted like personally good group.

A list for prog and non-
Pink Floyd - First - The Wall - Favorite - Dark Side of the Moon Genesis - First - Selling England by the Pound - Favorite - Selling England by the Pound Yes - First - Close to the Edge - Favorite - Fragile ELP - First - ELP - Favorite - None of 'em Rush - First - I can't remember, but it wasn't... - Favorite - Moving Pictures (the only one I like at all) Magma - First - Whichever is most highly rated here. Favorite - Magma (the debut) Comus - First - First Utterance - Favorite - To Keep From Crying (only half kidding, here. So Long Supernova is great) King Crimson - First - Court of the Crimson King - Favorite - Red Ayreon - First - The Final Experiment - Favorite - The Human Equation Rainbow - First - Rising - Favorite - Live in Germany Marillion - First - Misplaced Childhood - Favorite - Script for a Jester's Tear Beatles - First - Please Please Me - Favorite - Abbey Road Judas Priest - First - Painkiller - Favorite - Unleashed in the East Iron Maiden - First - Number of the Beast - Favorite - Iron Maiden (the debut without Dickinson) Tom Waits - First - Rain Dogs - Favorite - Either Bone Machine or Small Change, but Rain Dogs is really close. Bob Dylan - First - New Morning - Favorite - Highway 61 Revisited The Band - First - Music from Big Pink - Favorite - Music from Big Pink Radiohead - First - OK Computer - Favorite - Kid A Jethro Tull - First - Aqualung - Favorite - Aqualung Alan Parsons Project - First - Tales of Mystery and Imagination - Favorite - I Robot Neil Young - First - After the Gold Rush - Favorite - Weld (1991 live) (But to be fair, After the Gold Rush is my favorite Neil Young studio album) Leonard Cohen - First - Songs of Leonard Cohen - Favorite - Songs of Love and Hate Devin Townsend - First - Ocean Machine: Biomech - Favorite - Terria
I could continue, but the pattern stands. The first album I hear from a group is rarely my favorite, though it is usually ONE of my favorites. So keep in mind I can see how this phenomenon can occur for others.

Like everything else, it's subjective, as others have said. For me the first ones that came to mind were Leftoverture which was the first Kansas album I heard; I thought their previous work was much better, and Piper at the Gates of Dawn which I still dearly love but is not my favorite Floyd.

As I said before, i have about 4 or 5 Pink Floyd albums which I consider to be in the same level, but WYWH is my fav because it was my introduction to the band. The same goes for Deep Purple, few albums in the same level but Deep Purple is my fav, and it's because I heard it first, so sometimes it happenes and sometimes not, I guess the first has some extra weight in some cases.

Yes : First heard : Union Favorite : Close to the Edge King Crimson : First heard : In the Court Favorite : In the Court Genesis : First heard : Selling England by the pound Favorite : Selling England by the pound Gong : First heard : Shamal Favorite : Angel's Egg I must admit that for Pink Floyd and Yes, it was easy to find better afterwards...

What i mean is that in a lot of cases i happen to love best the first album i hear by any band, and i must wonder if it's because of the album or because it's my first encounter with that band?
It's not a rule but it happened to me quite a lot. Examples: Beardfish - sleeping in traffic 2, Camel - Mirage, Caravan - If i could..., Deep Purple - Deep Purple, Genesis - Selling England..Jethro Tull - Aqualung, and a million more.. So what do you think?

It must be co-incidental. I've listened to a lot of prog bands in chronological order, and IMO there are many good bands whose second album is considerably better than their first, i.e. Gentle Giant, VdGG, Pink Floyd, Jeavestone, Harmonium etc.

The album that made the band "click" for me usually remains very special.
It's worth mentioning though that the "click" album is not necessarily the first I heard. Genesis, for example, only clicked when I heard SEBTP, the first three albums didn't help at all.

For me, it was the opposite. SEBTP is the weakest album of their strong period. Great three first tracks, but then it tumbles down, and not even The Cinema Show can save it.

Genesis clicked for me with The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway which I heard playing at a playhouse lounge and it remains my favourite. My search for that album may be what eventually led me to join PA. I had actually thought it was a Gabriel solo album, since I recognised his voice, when I heard it, and after buying a few of his, I gave up. Ten years later I had the urge to find that album, and this time armed with the internet, it didn't take me that long -- with Amazon samples I recognised Hairless Heart. So that's what really brought me into prog, and a few years later I joined this site, My next Genesis album was.Selling England by the Pound, and I loved Cinema Show and Firth of Fourth particularly. Then Nursery Cryyme, then.... It's kind of weird that Genesis was so integral to my Prog journey, yet I don't much listen to the band any more. That's the same for all of early Prog encounters when I was about twelve that had an impression such as Yes' Fragile and Rush's Hemispheres and the vast majority of Prog that I discovered in my first two years of really getting into it starting about 9 years ago doesn't interest me much any more. So many seem to have the same favourites for decades, but that's another topic. Please excuse the digression.

No, not in general.
Crimson, my first was Court, now i'd say Larks
Genesis, my first was Foxtrot, now id say The Lamb.
Yes - still Fragile.
Floyd, i dont even know right now, it changes a lot over time. (first was Ummagumma i think)
Zep, still II
Jethro, first was Aqualung, now id go with Minstrel or TAAB

Well i don't know at which epoch you started listening to prog, you mention as first listened albums A Momentary Lapse of Reason and Union so I could guess that it was already past the 70's and then it's no surprise you eventually got to like better their 70's classics like Wish You Where Here or Close To The Edge, but you also cite as your first listen some early albums like JT Stand Up or Gong's Shamal, not sure if you mean that your heard these at the time they were released or only later.

^ I don't know if the time of release matters in this case (although there are people who have allergies to some annoyingly popular records of some genre or another, and thus an album first heard from a group may come off less attractive.)

If A Momentary Lapse, was recorded when he was 10, listning to Stand Up at its release would be very surreal.

Yes, wasn't that obvious, why do you underline it? It is weak for me and strong for you, and that does tell about our taste, but not about the object.

^ It's good to be more explicit in that direction because, for example, the way you replied assumes a very "objective" position and it looks like you make the conversation partner "wrong" in his tastes. Which always leads to endless fights.
