If you're talking about traditional progressive metal I think one of the best little known, newer bands in that genre have to be Penny's Twisted Flavour.

Tetrafusion, although they only have two albums, is really good. They're a combination of prog and Tech metal.

Then don't listen to it. Confused

I never do it by choice...but they play their stupid songs at my gym every day and sometimes I forget my headphones and have to endure the torture of repetitive pop... *gag* "music".

Foo Fighters are pop as well now these days are they? I guess everything is pop at the end of the day.

I consider anyone who only knows four chords to be pop. Actually Foo Fighters are not the worst thing they play on the gym's radio station. There are some things that make it a struggle not to jab my car keys into my ear drums.

Only knows four chords.....you are not serious? Anyway any Foo Fighters album is better than the DT bore fest.

And I'mnot much of a Fighters fan. just hate seeing a band disregarded so much. especially by a DT fan. Very shakey ground.
I enjoy the Foo's as well. Not sure if this has been mentioned here, probably has, but they played a song live with Chris Squire. He was at the hotel they were playing at and they invited him up, they played a Foo's song and Chris and Taylor Hawkins (the drummer) played like 10 or 20 seconds of Roundabout. I'm not sure if this is 100% accurate but I read somewhere (can't remember exactly where) that after that Chris and Taylor became friends, they played some stuff together at a few music festivals, and Taylor almost joined Squackett.

Also, these guys aren't on the site though I just suggested them, The Water's Deep Here are great.

They're basically my favorite band.  DT is my favorite, but the only reason SW isn't is because they don't have more albums.

great thread, great topic, shame I have not come across this before

so many favourite "unknown" bands to choose from, let's see... must be Soul Cages from Germany

I think people who enjoy e.g. Sieges Even will adore this band

Heaven´s Cry (http://www.progarchives.com/artist.asp?id=1739) comes to mind (and they´ve just reformed to record a third albumHeadbanger: http://www.metalmusicarchives.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=3897).

...just my kind of progressive metal with either no or very limited use of synths. Guitar and vocal driven hell yeah.

Not completely unknown but they definitely deserve more recognition, especially for this first album.

Only to the non prog/prog metal crowd. Otherwise you can add Opeth, Haken, Symphony X, Pain of Salvation, Between the Buried and Me and maybe a few others.

Trollheart: as Irish as losing a 3-0 lead in a must-win fixture!
