Amateur means not as talented. Mainly in regards to song composition. When Calvert became a full time member the compositions really improved

Well, they became more poppy that's for certain, I wouldn't call that improved compositionally myself, but then some people do seem to prefer their Prog to be simple and easily digested.

I love Masques & Chronicles. For years I referred to the songs on those albums alternately as "theme prog," "fantasy prog" or "barbarian prog"! LOL
