Could anyone recommend melancholic sounding prog albums and ones that may also transition from sad to uplifting atmospheres?

Van Der Graaf Generator - Pawn Hearts
Porcupine Tree - Fear of a Blank Planet Kayo Dot - Choirs of the Eye Those are a few pretty bleak ones to get started off with, I'll post some more later. Oh, two of the ballads (Far From Heaven and Beneath the Suface) from DT's newest are quite sad and very beautiful.

For me is very nice melancholic Syd Barrett's The Madcap Laughs for example
And transition from sad to uplifting atmospheres? Maybe ... Mike Oldfield's Incantations

Pretty much any post-rock works:
Also, some Opeth: Kayo Dot's Choirs of the Eye is one of the greatest albums ever recorded, but "melancholic" is a rather simplistic label for it. |

Quite a lot of ambient (Eno and Harold Budd) and Floyd's "space"-rock albums could fit the former description, particularly 'Absolutely Curtains' on "Obscured by Clouds" and "Shine On" (6-9) on "WYWH", that could fit the latter.

When i think melancholy I immediately remember Radiohead.
Aren't they the world's most melancholic band? |

Perhaps something from "Le Orme"... who knows what they are singing about (well, the italians do), but it sure sound melancholic.

I do not have The Difference Machine but Big Big Train's The Underfall Yard is also pretty melancholic and excellent.
