I bought and fell in love with A Little Man and a House and the Whole World Window about two weeks ago. I'd like to get in to thier other stuff. So could you post your favorite Cardiacs album describe the songs?

I only have A Little Man... and Sing to God, both impressive but I have to admit that I can rarely listen to them in a row, they tire me.

Indeed Frisppism will give you expert advice.

I've got them all and love 'em to bits.
No recommendation, you just can't go wrong with any of their albums.
Their last one (Guns) is supposed to be weaker than the rest, but I don't hear that.
For more details Frippism will probably be happy to help.

they went more punk but with echoes of Stranglers' psychedelia (especially in the keys), Zappa's humour, and overwhelming choirs. 'On land and in the sea' is a real masterpiece.

"Magma was the very first gothic rock band" (Didier Lockwood)

Definitely recommend Sing To God, it's an amazing album. They are one of those bands that are pretty consistently good all throughout their career except the last Guns falls a bit flat for me. Also on Sing To God they might not sound as wacky or charming as before, it has a bit of colder and heavier sound. Some recommends from me:

"Songs For Ships And Irons" is a compilation of earlier material and this song from it is fun as hell.

"Heaven Born And Ever Bright" already has a bit of "Sing To God" feel, not the best album but it's ok.

And this from "Sing To God", so take your pick but you might like quite a lot of it regardless of the era.

GET THEM ALL RIGHT NOW.  But you should probably check out Sing to God, On Land and In the Sea, and Songs for Ships and Irons next.  StG is the most different of those three from A Little Man... while the other two are pretty stylistically similar.

MEeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee I'm the expert! Shove off all of you!

Yeah all of them get all of them there's not a single one below great.

Sing To God is my favorite though- a punky, proggy, but in the end- pop in its most pure form of delight. Also some of the best song writing- pop wise, while still being ridiculously RIDICULOUSLY complex a lot of the time. So yeah. Sing To God.

And if you really end up loving a lot of Cardiacs music there is almost a whole scene of music that is in the same creative vein as Cardiacs in England like Knifeworld, Thumpermonkey Lives!, etc.

^ oh yeah totally. Side projects, especially Spratleys Japs (good god they're good) and Sea Nymphs are also an absolute must. Knifeworld's stuff from late has been fantastic!

Only place to get any of their material now which actually benefits the band and good ol' Timmy himself is iTunes at the moment.  Once they're available on CD again, I am going to re-buy the entire catalog, but for now I've got myself some nice, shiny iTunes files to tide me over.

Hmmm ... I have family who like to give me Itunes giftcards for birthdays and Christmases. Maybe I'll get some Cardiacs...

I'm a physical product guy, though. I can't display downloads on my shelf!!!

Well right now, the physical products aren't available, like, at all.  Even used.  I've been looking for a while, believe me.  Occasionally you see some of the CDs popping up for $80 or so.

So am I sorta. I found the seaside for about what would be about 40 bucks (150 shekels). I still bought everything from iTunes.

I might buy the Itunes download (even though I think $10 is a bit expensive for just files on my computer), because it helps Tim in his recovery. What exactly is the situation with that, anyhow?

Trust me if knew I'd be so much happier. He's recovering and all... But recoveries from stuff like strokes is slow... And I assume it'll be impossible to recover completely. I'm really not sure about the future of cardiacs :(
