Topic: Close to the Edge in Reverse Order Posted: June 07 2012 at 18:01 |
I've always thought that "Close to the Edge" was just short of being a perfect album but never really understood what the problem with it was. I now believe that the first track on the album is just too epic to not be the finale of the album. (2112 has the same problem) I feel its easier to appreciate "Siberian Khatru" and "And you and I" if you haven't just listened to one of the best tracks ever recorded. I would have made it, side B then Side A but "Siberian Khatru" has been used by YES as a concert opener so they're aware that its a good way to get the crowd up and listening. "And You and I" still sounds great as the middle track.

Only 3 tracks so I don't think it matters tbh.I would maybe put And You And I at the end as its one of the most beautifull prog tracks ever.Siberia Khatru as an opener makes some sense so I would go with:
Siberian Khatru
Close To The Edge
And You And I

^That wouldn't have been possible on vinyl without splitting the title track in halves.
I personally never had a problem appreciating And You and I and Siberian Khatru. I think Siberian Khatru would be too humble an opener for such an epic album.

actually a fair point. "Da Futura" is in the end of Udu Wudu, and it makes waiting for it worthwhile.

Well, Siberian Khatru is a good opening track, and the band has used it to open concerts. But the song Close To The Edge in my ears has not a real finale like for instance Awaken. Not that that's bad... it's just that I have the feeling that the song could be anywhere on an album. I starts and ends the same way, with ambient sounds. So it's like an island, a world on it's own.
Anyway, I couldn't imagine the album otherwise than it is. I don't feel a need to it either. I think it has a nice balance now.

I'll try listening that way some time, but as it stands, I think the ending of Siberian Khatru is even more "epic" than the ending of Close to the Edge, so I've always considered it an ideal closing track. Interesting idea anyway.

I actually agree, oddly enough. I usually only listen on CTTE on vinyl, and I listen to it in the original order, but when I listen to it on a long car drive, I end up naturally wanting to start with Siberian Khatru and end with CTTE. In the end, it's probably just a personal preference anyway.

When Yes toured with TfTO they started out playing CttE in reverse order followed by TfTO (not in reverse order of course) followed by an encore of at least Roundabout and sometimes Heart Of The Sunrise. Later on the tour they changed the setlist (apparently spending 2.5 hours on only 9 songs was a bit too much).

I always thought that CTTE's "evil twin" Relayer needed the tracks in a different order. I would have started with Sound Chaser and have the epic Gates as the finale

I agree as well. As much as I think Gates blows the other two tracks completely away, I think To Be Over would sound out of place anywhere else on the album. Yes did open shows with Sound Chaser though, just like they did with Siberian Khatru. Personally, I think they were just trying to give the live audience something different. I don't really understand the point of playing albums live, start to finish, unless they are concept albums. Also I think CTTE is perfect as is. Still, one nice thing about digital technology is that people who think otherwise can order tracks as they see fit (even on CD players you can program the tracks in whatever order you like).

Though I don't like moving around song order...
Sometimes after listening to an album, I feel like the longer songs should be placed at the end, usually because it seems like "Oh, now I have the shorter songs! Darn!". I prefer the Foxtrot/Pawn Hearts method. I wouldn't mind Siberian Khatru, And You And I, and Close To The Edge being the order, but I probably wouldn't bother me either way. It'd be just as satisfying either way since each piece is incredible in their own right.
