Indeed, I've always considered that to be the worst band name ever. It's almost like a self-parody of post-rock.

Post-rock band names deserve to be parodied.

And there are FAR worse singers (I think Peter Hamill and Tim Smith both plumb lows that Latimer never approaches, but that's all a matter of opinion).

Oi! Only I get to insult things I don't like!!! It's in the guidelines! Tim Smith is sacred.
I share some of Frippism's musical tastes, but I strongly disagree about Camel. Latimer's voice is perfect on albums like Mirage and Rajaz and is non-influent on Snow Goose that's fully instrumental. Of course if one doesn't like the mentioned albums there's nothing to discuss. Also Latimer doesn't sing so often. Colin Bass, Chris Rainbow just to mention a couple have been lead vocalists in Camel. Then can anybody say that Roger Waters is a better singer?

Camel has effectively been the worst band name and Mirage the worst sleeve because a lot of people thought that they were sponsored by the cigarettes brand (and they weren't). This caused them a lot of troubles and is probably one of the reasons why they hadn't the same success of the big prog bands.
Actually, that's not entirely true. A manager got a deal whereby 10 packs of Camel cigarettes would be given out free to fans at gigs. The band were horrified when they found out (despite being smokers themselves) and ditched the deal but only after it had been done a few times. There is also a story that the fag company also wanted them to record and album with cigarette related names for the tracks - but I can't confirm that.

But this is also the reason of the lawsuit about Snow Goose with the author of the novel

The author was dead. It was his widow who wouldn't allow quotes from the book to be spoken on the album so they were dropped.

Correct; Gallico was a rabid anti smoker and his widow vetoed any use of his work, hence the title "Music Inspired by the Snow Goose". And I'm delighted; any narration would have been detrimental to the greatest album ever recorded.

I gotta wonder: Did the OP choose these bands because he considers them (or one-word band names in general) particularly bador just because they all share a similar trait (one word) and can be easily compared?

Thanks for the info. I'm one of those who refused to buy the album when I saw it in a shop without knowing anything of the band. Only few years later I had the opportunity to listen to Camel in the right way. I was in a desertic zone of Spain, laying in the shadow of a broken wall in a hot afternoon with a San Miguel and some "accessories" and the album was Mirage. The only missing things were true camels and dunes. Smoke  I was very young actually. I mean that the name has probably kept some possible fans away.

I love Can, but I've always thought it was a rather dumb name. Rush and Camel are a close second/third.

The first three bands I thought of were Yes, Can and Camel. I tried to think of more and came up with Rush and Magma. In both polls I picked five well known groups who were all roughly from the same time period. I have nothing against one-word band names, but my fav group names usually have at least two words in them.

From these names I like Can the least, however this is still an excellent name compared to the band names which occur in grindcore and similar genres.
In the ProgArchives I find Leprous and My Dying Bride not exactly good band names, but their music is quite good.
How about Pitbulls in the Nursery? LOL

Of course, Extreme Metal bands have really bad names, sometimes even dull. But many Post/Math or Avant bands tend to have would-be "cool" names, until it's ever ridiculous and foolish.Confused

Ugh yeah Tippex are a pretty terrible band and have a pretty terrible name. The English spelling was changed because of copyright issues. Which is lolz.

Sorry but i have to comment, Tippex is a terrible name for a wonderful band, they have many great moments, and i really appreciate them as a band. Not a lot of people know their albums, just the radio stuff and it's quite different!
Love 'em.

Yes is a cool, positive name (in the early days, it was listed in gig adverts with an exclamation point, i.e. YES!). Good music for the most part.

I love Can, but it is a weird name for a band.

I love Magma, but that name's probably the worst of the lot. It's like a high school kid's idea of a great band name ("Like, molten lava maaaan")

Camel is an okay name, but not a big fan (I think they should have chosen the name 'Blandness')

Rush is a good one, and fits perfectly with their music.

Yescancamel is the worst. The three equally suck. The first two could be thought of as sexually implicit ... and Camel ... well, you can finish that one with three more letters at the end. The bottom line is: no vote from me.

I Love all of them, but I vote Yes, because it's  the most difficult to google it and generally it souds strange when speaking about them
It doesn't feel so very bad now,
I think the end is the start.
Begin to feel very glad now.
