I love VdGG to death, but Floyd wins this by a long shot.
EDIT: Good heavens, I just discovered that I voted in this pole a year ago. And it was for VdGG! Evidently my feelings have changed a great deal since then.

I would have picked VdGG as a teenager, but later discovering early Floyd up to but not including Dark Side of the Moon, made me pick Floyd.

I love both for different reasons, but voted for VDGG.
Pink Floyd is way more polished, better produced, and obviously gets the award for better guitar solos, but Hugh Banton is one of my favorite kybd players & PH has one of, if not the most incredible voices in prog (not to mention rock) history. Pink Floyd wins the nod for being more psychedelic and spacey, but I go with VDGG and the doom and gloom combo of Hugh's organ and PH's voice.

I mean, VDGG are great, evidently, but Pink Floyd is Pink Floyd !

I can't vote, but VdGG, and it's not even close.
I'll never understand the appeal of Pink Floyd tbh, Piper at the Gates of Dawn is their only album that I like from start to finish, almost everything post-Barrett sounds bland and lifeless to me.... I've tried so many times, but with the exception of a couple of trakcs here and there (like Echoes and Wish You Were Here), I just don't get it.

Does the track "Saucerful of Secrets" really sound bland and lifeless to you? :S Well, everyone's entitled to an opinion...
Anyway, I can't vote in this poll at the moment, the Floyd have more great albums but I just can't force myself to vote against a band that wrote songs like "Still Life", "Man-Erg", "A Plague of Lighthouse Keepers" and so many more which just make me feel that, while listening to them, there is no place on earth I'd rather be.

Voted for PF. It's great for art to be challenging and unconventional but it has to be pleasant to the senses and the brain too. I love and admire VdGG but (while they have truly amazing stuff, don't get me wrong) sometimes their artistry seems a bit forced.

In my All-time Top 10 'Meddle' sits at #1 and 'H to He Who Am The Only One' sits at #2. I cannot see anything changing that. ('Relayer' is #3 btw).

That's why I said almost everything (never listened to Saucerful that much though, it's decent from what I remember, needs another listen); I do like some of their material, but the problem I've always had with Floyd is that most of the time they fail to move me or leave any lasting impression on me because most of their material just feels really cold and distant to me and lacks any real emotional punch... I find it hard to explain, but how they managed to became so huge worldwide always baffled me because I've always found it very difficult to get into their music, even the songs I can say I sort of like now took me an insane amount of time to grow on me (again, there are a couple of exceptions -'Wish You Were Here' is the one I have to mention again, I think it might be my favorite Floyd song as cliché as that is, but that song instantly clicked with me, it really is just nice and pretty and makes me feel something that's not boredom and indifference). l think they were never particularly good with melodies and their instrumental passages are mostly meandering and frankly just... dull. I was never a fan of Gilmour's singing either (Waters is even worse). It's actually quite odd that I find their most popular albums the most difficult to get into, I've been listening to them a lot lately but it looks like I'm not gonna change my mind any time soon... I gave another spin to DSOTM this morning, I must have heard it dozens of times already, but 'Time' is still the only song I really like on it, the rest is just incredibly uneven and honestly doesn't do much for me. WYWH has the title track, 'Shine on' is decent but really not that great and I could have done without the second part, the other two songs are among the worst things in their catalogue ('Welcome to the Machine' is everything I don't like about them and that melody is absolutely trite). And don't get me started on The Wall... 90% filler, 10% of actual substance and waaay too much of Waters for my liking.
Sorry Floyd fans, I've been trying, but Piper is their only album I truly like and Meddle is very good, the rest I could take or leave, I guess they just aren't for me. At least we can agree on VdGG (except for the part about Floyd having more great albums).

Van der Graaf Generator, definitely. Reasons: Hammill > any PF vocalist Hammill > Waters (lyrics) Banton > Wright (though it's not really fair, because Banton is almost strictly an organ player) Evans > Mason to hell with the guitars, saxophone rules! VdGG emotion > PF emotion it's cooler if you like VdGG more because they're more obscure etc.

This got me thinking, how would I compare my top 5 VDGG tracks vs my top 5 PF tracks? A Plague of Lighthouse Keepers > Echoes White Hammer > See Emily Play La Rossa > One Slip Man Erg > Time Octopus < Comfortably Numb
VDGG 4 vs PF 1...that's why I voted for VDGG.
