Topic: Ozric Tentacles vs Dream Theater Posted: June 17 2012 at 05:06
"bands with no relation what-so-ever poll series" prog edition
this is the prog edition, two bands from the same decadeo who produced
progressive music, but are sort of complete oppisites (in my head) one
is agrresive, metaly, fast, groovy, and virtose, the other is calm,
psychadelic, mendering, and virtose, both are a spctrum of progressive
music in the 90s, probably also the two most distinct, (sorry Porcupine
Tree you were there also, but not as distinct as ether the Ozrics nor
DT, IMO), these are the polar-oppesits of progressive rock in the 90s,
IMO,
who is your favourite,
and this is not a thread to bash DT I like them much and respect them
and have listend to them much more then OT, but bothe should be
respected as the candle barers of progressive rock in the 90s, both are
true progressive bands who took the raley race stick through the 90s,

I love Ozric Tentacles, and they're more consistent, but Dream Theater highs are higher than anything OT have put out. And at least I can remember the names of Dream Theater songs.

Neither are my favourites, but I'll go with DT as they have the potential to be very proggy. Ozrics are good but I find them repetitive and can't name a single song. All their albums to me sound the same. DT is also guilty of this, but at least I can remember and name their best songs.
Ok, I'm just going to lay this out there, and I'm sure Dean will come in and say I'm stupid and a bunch of people will say "rah rah Dean, he's our man", but: If Ozric wins, this proves my point that Prog Metal fans don't like to hang out around here for whatever reason (you can come up with the reasons for that yourself), because SURELY there are more DT fans out there than Ozric fans.

There are more so-called progressive rock fans here than so-called progressive metal fans, and Dream Theater is loathed by many who prefer progressive rock and by those who enjoy other, commonly more experimental, styles of progressive metal. Ozric Tentacles is a pretty well-known modern band in Prog circles, but there will be votes that are not so much for Ozric Tentacles as against Dream Theater.
Of course you don't have to be a fan of either to have a preference. I'm not really a fan or hater of either, but I still prefer Ozric Tentacles.
Dream Theater surely has more fans out there, but it also has many more detractors.
I really like both, but may prefer Ozrics in the long run. Erpland is a brilliant record for my tastes. Eternal Wheel is still one of the sauciest openers out there...

No, you're 1,000,000% right - Prog Metal fans don't hang around here much... looking at other Prog sites and other Metal sites they don't hang around there either. In terms of numbers, Prog Metal fans are not that copious, I've been in the metal scene for best part of twenty years and PM fans are most certainly in the minority compared to most other metal subgenres, regardless of how many albumins Dream Theatre have sold. Look at the lineups of every metal festival that's occuring in Europe this year and play spot the Prog Metal band, I did not need to take my shoes and socks off to count them. It's a sad fact but a true one.
Now Greg is probably correct in assuming the Prog Metal hatters (whether that's people who don't care for Dream Theatre or those that don't like any metal) will spite-vote for the Ozrics, and it's equally true that metal fans who don't like Dreem Theata but dislike Psychedelic Rock more will spite-vote for Dreme Theater. But do we really care about those votes, or even who wins this poll?
Now, as for my vote in this poll - I like both bands, quite a bit actually - but I can only vote for one and while there is one other band in Psyche/Space I prefer over the Ozrics, there are many in Prog Metal I prefer over Dream Theatre, and as David says, Erpland is a briliant albumin, and I've seen the Ozrics twice now and they are a fantastic live band, so I voted for them. Sorry about that.
