Okay, we're all opposed to greatest hits albums and nearly all of us will agree it doesn't work very well for prog-type bands. Having said that, I noticed IQ doesn't really have a Hits-type album for those who don't know the band very well. So, if the band were going to put together a "Best Of" album, which songs do you think absolutely have to go on there?

For my part, I nominate three: Harvest of Souls, The Last Human Gateway, and Frequency. What else has to go on there? (Feel free to include live versions, b-sides or other rarities to make it more enticing :-)

(Obviously, we're talking at least 2 CDs, since those first two tracks are pretty lengthy...)

Trying to keep things as concise as possible (ie 2 CDs worth of time so < 160 mins of music), and opting for a chronological order, seeing as IQ have a wonderful arc of development through their career:

Disc 1:
1) The Last Human Gateway
2) My Baby Treats Me Right 'Cos I'm A Hard-Lovin' Man All Night Long
3) Outer Limits
4) The Magic Roundabout
5) Headlong
6) The Darkest Hour
7) Overture
8) Subterranea
9) Failsafe

Disc 2:
1) Capricorn
2) Guiding Light
3) Sacred Sound
4) Harvest Of Souls
5) Frequency
6) The Province

That comes to about 150 mins of music (so you could put one more in if you wished), which would have to be split as shown above. I included "my baby treats me right..." becuase why not? it's only a minute or so, and I find it quite a neat little thing. Didn't include anything from the menel era because in my opinion it just isn't as good.

If there was a good live version of TLHG, then I'd be tempted to use that, as when I saw IQ live, their version of this was really great, better even than the album version by quite a way.

Sad to miss out stuff like the enemy smacks, the narrow margin and ryker skies but oh well.

Well what I'd do is it call it a Best Of, seeing as it's a Best Of, not a Greatest Hits.

LOL yeah, I'm pretty sure "IQ greatest hits" could only consist of "barbell is in".

I'd could argue for pretty much everything they've ever done, really.

But, if pushed:

Awake & Nervous
The Wake
Widows Peak
Promises (Yeah, I know it's poppy - but I love it)
The Darkest Hour
Leap of Faith
Speak My Name
Zero Hour
Guiding Light
Sacred Sound
You Never Will
Frequency

I'd like to include the whole of The Narrow Margin, but it's too long; I might include the middle section which begins "Told me, Go the way of your heart".

But I've left off so many amazing tracks; I could well believe that someone could come up with a completely different list and I wouldn't argue. IQ are THAT good.

Life is like a s**t sandwich; the more bread you have, the less s**t you have to eat.

Absolutely agree, and there IS a good live version of this song on The Archive Collection IQ20, released back in 2003: http://www.progarchives.com/album.asp?id=3376.

Virtually the same working of the song as this wonderful vid:

There's another pretty good live version of it on the latest in the Archive Collection Series, IQ30 De Boerderij, Zoetermeer, Holland, 23 October 2011, which is available for GBP12.00 here: http://www.iq-store.co.uk/shop/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=1&products_id=64&zenid=fb1f9c5db130d99dc03efa473ff54228

The two non-nicholls CD's - Nom Zamo and Are you sitting Comfortably - don't get much coverage really but I really like four tracks from these two - Human Nature , Common Ground, Nostalgia/Falling Apart at the seams and Wurensh...
Anybody else concur?

Very much so.

Menel did a great job with the lyrics on both albums for sure. Are You Sitting Comfortably? is an album I've grown very fond over the years even liking the poppier tracks like Sold On You and Drive On. Nothing At All is also a lovely dreamy song.
Nomzamo is less consistent but does have those tracks you mention as well as the excellent No Love Lost (although I prefer the live version as per my list above)

^ x4... Don't know how this quote of my own previous post got here...must have accidentally hit the 'quote yam yam' option instead of the 'edit post' one. If anyone in admin wants to tidy up the thread by deleting this superfluous post (and then also this one) then please go ahead.  Embarrassed

You can't go wrong with pretty much anything by IQ.

As long as the "Best Of" included The Seventh House, Leap of Faith, Riker Skies, Sacred Sound, The Magic Roundabout and Sleepless Incidental, I'm happy Tongue.

You can delete a post you have made without getting admin involved as long as nobody else has posted after it. Once another post has been made subsequent to it then any previous ones can only be removed by admin.

I guess it's a bit too late now anyway! Embarrassed

Regarding an IQ 'Best Of' compilation, the band are really spoilt for choice. Pretty well everything they have recorded has its merits - they have always taken plenty of time with their albums and made sure the content of every one of them is well up to scratch. I would be happy with virtually anything from their back catalogue on a 2-disc compilation, and all the sugestions made in this thread thus far would work really well imho.

Yep I agree. IQ have never had any big dips like most bands. Nomzamo is my least favourite album by them but I still wouldn't want to be without it.
