Individuals are the arbiter of what offends them, and statements of "shoulds" and rights in the matter makes no difference to that.

If I said your comment comes from ignorance I have not called you ignorant

The first proposition implies the second, necessarily and by definition. The second proposition can remain unspoken and its meaning still be ascertained adequately by the listener.

I don't know how I missed this the first time around.  Confused

In response to your first statement, I have to agree with Snowie.  Individuals are idiots.

In response to your second statement, that is simply not true.  The first statement "your comment comes from ingnorance" implies that you do not have enough knowledge on the subject about which you are speaking.  The second statement "you are ignorant" implies a more generalized ignorance, i.e. "you are ignorant about just about everything" = "you're an idiot".

I have no idea why he took so much offence  to that comment.

The statement "it is aerodynamically impossible for a bumblebee to fly" comes from an ignorance of aerodynamics since it is evident that a) bumblebees can fly and b) aerodynamics are involved, the person making that statement is not ignorant, they are only lacking sufficient knowledge of aerodynamics to explain how a bumblebee flies.

Interesting. Presumably you are referring to Manhatten Project. In what way do you find the lyrics offensive?

Funny, if I thought any of his lyrics were offensive, I'd probably end up pointing to songs like "Something for Nothing" which sounds like it could be played at the Republican National Convention, or possibly "The Trees" for it's metaphorical assertion that those at the bottom should just stay there and be happy with their lot and let those at the top grab whatever they can.  However, I think Peart grew a lot from those early Randian days and if memory serves me correctly, he now defines himself as a "left-leaning libertarian".  In fact, a lot of his lyrics take more leftist views and "Manhatten Project" certainly is one of those songs.  The "Fear" songs are definitely from a more leftist perspective, "Big Money", and the list goes on.

Some are, some aren't but that's not controversial as such.

One song has the last word in a line forming the first word in the next. I like that kind of thing.

Given the traditional derivation of the term controversial, and the prevailing lyrical thrust of Prog, it seems self evident that there are very few prolonged and fractious debates about any particular aspect of the genre to merit the description being applied. However, should Steven Wilson release an album called 'fa****s go Home' the entire climate could change markedly....
