hmmmmm....

Pink Floyd, "Animals"
Starcastle, "Citadel" and "Fountains of Light" were both released in 1977
Cluster & Eno
Captain Beyond, "Dawn Explosion" (just listened to it after a long hiatus, it was better than I had remembered)
Strawbs, "Deadlines"
Jean-Luc Ponty,"Enigmatic Ocean"
Dixie Dregs, "Free Fall"
Happy The Man (one of the great works of that year!)
UFO, "Lights Out"
Kansas, "Point of Know Return"
ELP, "Works, Volume 1"

I agree with gazagod, "interesting year"....some of my all-time favorites came out ("Before & After Science"!!), but a lot of dreck as well.

With the release of the seminal 'Never mind the bullocks" by the Sex Pistols, the opening shot of the war between punk/new wave and prog was made.

One album not mentioned which I think is underrated, but not pure prog:

The O Band - The Knife - some great stuff on that.

Otherwise, great year with Animals and Going for the one topping the list.

the start of NWOBHM I guess. Seem to remember someone at school lending me a Judas Priest album and it might have been that one. Was never that keen on heavy metal until Iron Maiden and Motorhead surfaced tbh.

1977 is my favourite year for prog releases.  So many brilliant albums, most of which have already been mentioned.

Not sure if I saw Seconds Out by Genesis, a fabulous live record.  I probably missed it.  However, one definitely missing is the fantastic Black Noise by FM.  I still listen to that album a lot, even now.  Brilliant album.

Love both, but if I have to choose just one of them (which I did) I choose "Low".
