Okay, for the first time in many a year, I am listening to my one & only Tangerine Dream album, the excellent Rubycon. For some reason, I never got around to exploring more of their stuff, and the interview with the band in Classic Rock Presents Prog this issue piqued my interest again.

So, to all you prog electronic fans, which three albums would you recommend to me? Is the later stuff worthwhile?

Personally I'd stick within the "Virgin era" to begin with.

If you liked Rubicon then Ricochet is a live recording of their "Electronic Music" style that I think surpasses Rubicon.

For a change in style, Force Majeure and Cyclone are more Progressive Rock and I'd recommend those too (but primarily Force Majeure).
What?

Hey Steve.
Knowing your tastes, I would strongly recommend you pick up Force Majeure. It's got some drumming and guitars in there, and is really one of the most lovable and attractive albums to the casual progger methinks.
That, Stratosfear - maybe Exit and Tangram I would start out with, if I were you.

Personally I much prefer the earlier abstract years, but my guess is that you would feel more enamoured by these later ones over the Krautrocking first couple of releases

I personally haven't gotten into much of their latter material, but I probably should sometime soon.
You can't go wrong with any of these classics:
Phaedra - Favourite
Zeit - Very dark and brooding
Stratosphere - Spacey, as always
Cyclone - Supposedly Yes influenced, can't really hear it myself though

I really hope you'll feel the gentle persuasion of TD. Summertime is the ideal setting for electronic music, especially Berlin School.
Bon voyage.

One word of warning - Cyclone has vocals - not everyone likes TD with vocals, it is an aquired taste to say the least.

Yes, even though it is chucking it down with rain here (as bloody usual in West WalesAngry), sometimes the gentle persuasion you talk about is great, and I was just in the mood for this tonight.

I tend to go through phases in my listening (aside from when I am asked to review a band, when I will listen whatever the mood). I am coming out of a heavier phase now and into a more ambient mood, so TD would seem to be ideal for that.

Just goes to show that even now, after all these years of progging, it is possible to discover or rediscover music that you know will bring you a great deal of joy.

Rubycon is great.  Phaedra is my favorite of the 6-7 that I've heard.  Green Desert is also very solid.  Zeit is a lot more abstract, but if you're in the mood, it's a goody.
