Thanks for the kudos Hugues!  They mean alot coming from you, whom I have certainly learned from.  I recently finally listened to and reviewed Comus and Jan Dukes de Grey.  Your tutelage helped me appreciate both but more so the latter.  I liked your review of Midlake's latest.  Sounds like you might be coming around insofar as seeing them as a prog group.  Even some of the mainstream press have referred to this latest one as more prog than folk.  Either way, good stuff

I agree that ratings tend to be a bit high.  If I am guilty of it, it's usually because I just don't give enough time to mediocre releases to feel like I can fairly review them.   But we need those counterbalancing reviews.  Proof of that is the recent complaints about negative reviews which, while partially valid, lose their credibility when they proclaim that 60 people rated it 4 or 5 stars, so the person rating it 1 or 2 stars must not know what they are talking about.

Thanks Hugues.  As you know I'm a big fan of your conservative ratings, which I always thought was the way people should rate.....while it is hard to make those choices it made your record of reviews so much more helpful than most.

I agree with you about Chicapah-Rollie, one of PAs biggest treasures.

My others faves include Guldbamsen and LinusW, two of our sauciest wordsmiths who describe sound in such an entertaining way.

Just found out about this thread ShockedEmbarrassed - I must say that there are just too many different forums to check out when you have to little time to dedicate to this forum) and to have to little time to read other reviews as well (but I do that generally AFTER I wrote mine of an album)

so hopefully I got mentioned at least once (can always dream, uh?? >> no time to read up the 17 pages), but I must say that the best reviewer IMHO is Chicapah, who always brings in excellent background stuff and is highly entertaining... I wish he'd be reviewing many more albums (though he also writes a bunch more for JMA), but more out of the "mainstream" (is NIN mainstream, thoughLOL) stuff

Other reviewers I generally enjoy (needless to say when I encounter their scribblings on an album page I visit >> I don't chase reviewers) are Easy Livin (those witty  review titles are worth the detour, just by themselvesLOL), our two Peruvian buddiesClap (Cesar and Ivŕn) and our other  Latino-american Guillermo/MW, my PF team buddies HugClem/Bob and Keneth (who really blossomed of late), Jim/FF, Eetu , Dave /Atav and of course John "review champion" Storm
But among our newer members, the real championStar is Aussie/Michael... though I'd love to read more unfavorable reviews ( 1 or 2 stars) from his ...

Very nice write up Kangaroo. I enjoyed that one.

Another one I really found interesting was Thanos' recent Riverside review. A very nice and friendly way of using the two star rating, and written in a manner that comes across very politely yet is rather poignant and sharp at the same time.
I also happen to agree with him in his verdictBig smile

Fantastic, long review by Michael aka Aussie-Byrd-Brother on Taliesyn...At the moment I added the band, he came up with a detailed description of an unknown, under-the-radar album, making me dig into the group a bit further...Absolutely on spot, not to mention I love when a guy around here spends some precious time around an album that has unfairly faded in time.Congrats!

^ Well i've got 5 of those ThomasLOL it's been slim picking for me this year although I must admit a lot of what i've bought this year aren't 2013 releases.
Oh and Michael that's cool that we both hear that Paatos reference on that Cos album.Thumbs Up

I am not sure whether many realize the absolute quality of 2013 releases! I have stated before (in June I believe) that 2013 may end up being one of the best years EVER! My list is ridiculous and rivals both 1973 and 1974 which were the unshakable years for prog .
Here it is then in no particular order with only a few alterations to come

a.       Resonaxis- Hymnarium

b.      From.uz- Sodom & Gomorrha

c.       Airbag- The Greatest Show on Earth

d.      Legend- Spirit

e.      Unreal City- La Crudelta di Aprile

f.        Oceans5- Road to Mingulay

g.       Flamborough Head-Lost in Time

h.      Iain Jennings- My Dark Surprise

i.        Magenta- the 27 Club

j.        Lizard- Master & M

k.       Gandalf’s Fist- A Day in the Life…..

l.         Lifesigns- same

m.    Big Big Train- English Electric Part 2

n.      Henry Fool- Men Singing

o.      Cosmograf- The Man Left in Space

p.      Il Cerchio D’Oro- Icaro e Dedalo

q.      Oxhuitza-same

r.        Herd of Instinct- Conjure

s.       IQ- Tales from the Lush Attic Remix

t.        Elephants from Scotland- Home away from Home

u.      Steve Wilson- The Raven…

v.       La Maschera di Cera- Le Porte del Domani

w.     Comedy of Errors- Fanfare & Fantasy

Yes, I'm seriously considering putting it in my final top 2013! But this year has been so good, so not sure if it might make the cut or just be edged out!

Thanks for giving it some much deserved love!

Thank you, John! I laughed in your review of it when you mentioned Paatos briefly as well, I thought I was crazy when I thought that originally!

Just wanted to draw attention to Tszirmay's current Flamborough Head review:

http://www.progarchives.com/Review.asp?id=1090571

It's probably the neo prog album of the year, and he sure has written better about it than I ever could!

I enjoyed Micheal's review of COS just now. I couldn't agree with you more either about Son reminding you of Platon on ZAO's first one, with those wordless Vocal melodies. I know they were very familiar with Zao and if I remember correctly I think COS' first one reminds me more of Zao's debut than Viva Boma does.

Brilliant review today by The Mystical for Pawn Hearts:  http://www.progarchives.com/Review.asp?id=1086559.  I'm not much of a "lyrics" guy (generally can't understand what people are singing!), but I was quite intrigued by his interpretation of them.

I have all their albums and I must ask if you have any others?
Thanks for your kind words Sagi!!Embarrassed

Unfortunately I have not been able to dig further into their sound, although I know they changed their name after the 1st album - possibly along with a slight change of style??? -...Anyway, this was a great band back at the time and their name is definitely among the ones who deserve some further research.

Thanks Sagi & HolyMoly for your kind words!  The Road to Red was the first review I've ever written.  When I was working on it I kept thinking of this quote from my fave Bevis Frond song...

Yes, thank you Dennis for that comprehensive review of Road to Red!
I'm nowhere near fanatical enough to buy it, but now that I've read your review, I at least know what I'm missing. Big smile
