I appreciated the review too, even though I think it's in the running for the worst Strawbs album. The derivative aspect that you mention is just one of a slew of problems I have with Heartbreak Hill, and I can't imagine the superior remastering would help my opinion at all!

SteveG, I finally got my From the Witchwood CD last week and love it! My favorite songs are A Glimpse of Heaven, the title track and The Hangman and the Papist, which really astounded me with its escalating intensity. I also dig the bonus track. I definitely plan on exploring more Strawbs albums.

Glad you enjoy it. "Witchwood" kind of appeals to both Yes and Strawbs fans. It must be that Wakeman fellow. ;)

Hmm, seems like I may just have to investigate some Strawbs in the near future with all the discussion they've been generating 'round these parts.

agreed on all counts. The bonus track has to be a top 20 Strawbs track for me. It's odd that the style is more like the Bursting at the Seams group, which was 2 albums later! Tony Hooper, who I think was the singer, wasn't even in the group anymore by then

Been loving Kevin's recent reviews, especially the most recent one on The Ladder. They express my thoughts almost exactly in such a great and hard-hitting way.

I forgot to mention the bonus track, "Keep The Devil Outside" in my review, so I'll have to amend it! Yes, that is Hooper on vocals and I agree that the song would have fit perfectly on Bursting At The Seams or even on Grave New World. I suppose that they didn't want to rerecord Wakeman's keyboards as he had left for bigger days with Yes after recording "Witchwood". It still should been released as an A side.

I'm so biased, that it's hard to say.  Seriously, you can't go wrong with either Grave New World or Witchwood, IMHO. They're both good in that they're not similar. Kind of how prog used to be, back in the day.

Don't read much album reviews nowadays but that Grave one was excellent, Steve. And the best is yet to come with the Bursting/Hero/Ghosts masterpieces.

VianaProghead has a very nice summary of the qualities of "One Hour by the Concrete Lake". Its my second favorite POS after "Be". A very under appreciated work.

fine review of Strawbs "Bursting at the Seams", Steve. It's an album that's unfairly dismissed around here. But I would have liked to hear your thoughts on the bonus tracks. With those on Grave New World adding nothing to the original, even detracting, I find both "Will Ye Go" and "Backside" to be Strawbs at their best.

Thanks Ken. I'm not a I fan of either track with the traditional "Will You Go" (Wild Mountain Thyme) done better by many others, but they are harmless enough.
