if MGMT isn't prog by the standards of this website, then this website needs to change its name to "classic rock archives". i've been aghast at some of the crap-ola on here which some folks have passed off as prog. nevertheless i submit to your discretion, MGMT:

I think they could fit into Prog related I honestly think. But you just pissed off a lot of people who have a say in getting him into PR. |

i just read the first two suggestions and some of the comments were harsh, i don't think the band is that bad, nice band to listen to, not to offensive, but i like Thom Hell better, and he also tingles with retro psych and some suprising semi-progressive breaks, but MGMT is fitting the crossover bar, while not being ovrely complex, they utilice musicianship that is not alian from a prog band, long extended songs, use of technology and effects, soundscapes, dreamy and out there soundscapes,
i would not seriously dismiss them, and i think also it is not healthy to not include bands just becouse they got airplay and are popular to the staff in MTV, PA should not care for where they gets the music aired but how the music itself is, how the albums is contructed, how it is compered to other New Prog outfits, are they compareable to Mew for instance, they should be compared to their pairs not to the 70s bands not to the 80s bands of prog, but to bands like Radiohead, who is the cannon of progresssive rock/music in the 90s, not the Genesises and Yesses, ofcourse they are important machpoints to validate progelements, but it is unhealthy on un-progressive to only look for similaritys in past-time heros of prog when new bands are getting suggested, or try to do interesting stuff with rock, what MGMT does is indeed using the elements of 60s psych, i can hear traces of Beatles and surf music, but i also hear a strong modern senceabilaty and progressivness, and elements from a modern prog band called Radiohead, and progy input from New Wave, (which is the progressive genre in the 80s and most forward thinking style and should be looked as a healthy imput for a band who wants to be prog rock, to mend styles that differs from the prog sounds, or tingle sounds form new wave with prog to enhance a stronger more fresher prog sound) and I think MGMT does exactly that, IMO IMO IMO |

^ They undeniably have been strongly influenced by Pink Floyd. Cover of Lucifer Sam, is really good.

No need to diss the inclusions to the sight brah. There's plenty of modern, and boundary pushing bizarre weirdo not remotely prog in the classic sense of the word stuff here.
MGMT is psych-pop, IMO. Excellent psych-pop, but whether they are prog or not is a tougher question.

Hang on... let me get this right: If we don't add this band then we have to change our name to "classic rock archives"? So presumably if we were to add them we'd have to change it to "classic rock and indie psyche pop archives".
MGMT have been suggested twice before (how difficult can it be to search for "MGMT"

The only thing these guys have in common with prog is that they like Brian Eno.

I dig MGMT. I don't get what's even to dispute about whether or not they're "prog" enough. I mean they are excellent musicians and marketing geniuses as well. They made three pop singles and from then on have wrote whatever insane psychedelic music they feel like. and it's all well written and arranged in often complex and changing song structures. It also has a lot of melody to it which I think some progressive music falls short on at times. I dig these guys and I'm stoked as poop for the third release!

I would sh*t a kitten if MGMT was added to this site.
I don't know what that means, but I would do it. And it would not be good. |

I could see MGMT for crossover or prog-related (like Muse), but that would be pushing it.
Also, if MGMT isn't added to this site, renaming this site Classic Rock Archives would be ridiculous because Meshuggah and Dir En Grey are in the database and are definitely not classic rock.

Oh yeah, and Siberian Breaks is a great song.
I wouldn't fret about them not being in the archives. I like plenty of bands that aren't in the archives and it doesn't claw away at me. |
