Decemberists fans, to me! I seek a brand of music that I cannot name, but have daringly decided to call "post folk rock." Or maybe "dream folk," as determined by my (Pulitzer worthy) review of the Decemberists' debut album.

Basically, I want something that sounds like the track "An Interlude" from Hazards Of Love; you know, the instrumental with Robyn Hitchcock guest starring on background guitar. The only other thing I can kind of think of that vaguely sounds like it even in that band's catalog would be in some sections of "California One/Youth And Beauty Brigade."

What I want to hear is something that uses folk instrumentation, but has the dreamy-jammy quality of post rock. I suppose I could see something like Godspeed You! working, since they do post rock with a predilection for natural instruments, particularly strings and things. But it's gotta be folky, and I ain't folkin' around. Anyone have any suggestions for me?

Only going by the description as I don't know any of the music you name but what about Mike Oldfield - Ommadawn Pt2 ? I'm thinking the first 5 minutes mainly though. Does that get anywhere close?

What a strange track you picked to focus on from that album.

You can find piles of that sort of ambient, acoustic instrumental stuff in the indie world.  If you're interested in what exists on the Archives, here are a few recommendations:

Barr (Swedish ambient, acoustic folk)

Long Live Death (American and pretty minimalist)

Trio Dag (Serbian and a bit dated but worth a try)

Chrysalide (couple of French guys who play lots of mellow guitar and put out a trio of nominally-related albums)

Flor de Loto (Peruvian and a bit more animated, but along the same lines as the groups listed above)

I'm assuming you're already aware of groups like Sigur Ros, Meanwhile Back in Communist Russia and maybe even Caspian.

Outside of Prog Folk you can check out Calexico, Birdeatsbaby, maybe Ponderosa...

Slightly off topic:

I have seen the term post-folk, but if I understand it, it means using traditional or ancient music as a basis for more modern music (adding modern instruments like drums and electric guitar). So there is a progressive element there.
One example is Atalyja, a lithuanian band which I like www.youtube.com/watch?v=2VQ4YjaUb1U

I guess It will sound different depending on what folk tradition it builds on.

But if you fuse post-rock with folk I don't think it would be called Post-folk-rock, but rather.. Folk Post-Rock ! Smile Huge difference.

Well, I'm a strange kinda guy...certainly there's nothing else on that album that sounded like it, or (as I believe I rightly said) the Decemberists' history. It stood out is what I suppose I meant.

I shall investigate these various suggestions; much thanks lads.

I BELIEVE the proper term is folksy-posty-rock-toasties. Thank you very much.

Triceratopsoil beat me to the Nocturnes, but I'll second that suggestion:

Okay... very unique genre name at least.. The point of my post however, I guess it didn't interest you very much...
