Just back from a full evening's entertainment from some old but
definitely well known musicians: Alvin Lee, Edgar Winter and Tony
McPhee. An evening of nostalgia at DeMontford Hall (Leicester), if you
like the blues and rock'n'roll. Edgar Winter got to play Free Ride (short) and Frankenstein (note: on the Vertigo Records
prog sampler, released in the early 90's), and told us audience he was
the first keyboard-player to have a synth strapped around his neck so
he walk and play around the stage. You forget Winter is getting old
because his albino hair and beard make him look young - until you see
him walk (looks a touch arthitic) and more, a roadie had to take the
weight, so he could  strap a Roland around his neck.  Tony
McPhee did a too short a set, but I managed to get him to sign my Gutbucket LP after! Alvin Lee was excellent and climaxed an 1 hour long set with I'm Going Home, which slipped through all sort of styles (including 2 minutes of Woody Herman's Woodchopper's Ball - first heard on that proto jazz rock album of Ten Years After's Undead).
Not for modern prog fans perhaps, but for us old pharts a reminder of
some of prog's more distant roots and some of the paths that late 60's
rock took.

One show left tomorrow night in London - expect 3 hours plus of some good entertainment
