After voting please discuss your favorite comedies.   What makes a great funny movie?; is it the writing as with Python or Neil Simon, or is it more performance like in Spinal Tap or Fast Times?   And is there a difference between 'Funniest' and 'Best comedy' ?   Choosing a Woody Allen is hard as there are so many good ones; I listed Annie Hall as a fallback but would personally pick Crimes & Misdemeanors or Zelig over Annie.   Ben Stiller like him or not has undoubtedly done some high-quality work, and the Python is a matter of taste.

After Hours. One of my absolute favourite movies and the best thing Scorsese ever did.

Voted for Spinal Tap.  I would ordinarily vote for Python, as I think they're incredible, but the Holy Grail just hasn't aged that well for me.  Their best work was on the Flying Circus TV shows.

But as far as laugh-out-loud funny goes, Spinal Tap gets me every time.  So does Young Frankenstein (Put... the candle... back!).

The Big Lebowski is laugh out loud funny too.

A very tough call, but I'm going with the Pythons.

I am not a huge fan of most of these, but After Hours is absolute genius. One of the funniest films ever.

Yes, but the problem is that I haven't saw the other movies. But Holy Grail is classic.

My favorite funny movies are Plunkett & Macleane and the American version of The Ladykillers.

Can't say I agree with you, Steve. I mean,  I don't think Holy Grail has aged any worse than their other movies (or series). In fact, I don't think their movies (or series) has an ageing problem at all. They were groundbraking when first aired, and they're still relevant today, both as entertainment for the general public and as inspiration for young comedians, IMO. The stuff they made are classics that will never be out of date, as far as I'm concerned.

Tropic Thunder was a film I  didn't enjoy or find funny at all. Apart from Rob Downey. Thought it was awful.

Seeing the previews on this one basically led to me having no interest in seeing it.  So I haven't.

I agree - I chose my words badly.  By "hasn't aged that well for me", I meant that I've grown a bit tired of the movie personally, and don't get as much enjoyment out of it as I get older.  I didn't mean that the movie is dated in any way.  So yeah - it's a funny movie, no doubt, I just like other stuff of theirs better now.
