Actually, Zappa played on SNL twice. Once where he was there as the guest musician/ band. The other time he hosted, and that was a great episode! He played "Dancing Fool" and did some funny skits, including one with the Coneheads.

Now remember, this isn't really what bands you'd like to see on SNL. But rather, what bands would have a realistic chance of appearing on SNL (and not getting booed off the stage!).

I was listening to RPWL Beyond Man and Time today and thought that "The Shadow" might work. A bit long (just over 6 minutes), but kind of danceable and relatively straight-forward.
So who's going to contact SNL and get this set up?
Seriously though, I was going to say Sigur Ros, but figured they'd be too delicate and atmospheric for a show like SNL. They are quite accessible though, but lack the groove and upbeat I suppose a show like that would require.Umphrey's McGee, maybe? Phish?

I agree on Knifeworld.
Not sure about TMV. Certainly they have a fairly large fan-base. But it seems to me they are both too aggressive and too "weird" for SNL. But perhaps not!
