First listen. The music is good, but I'm somewhat put off by the vocals. They remind me too much of the voice of Billie Joe Armstrong of Green Day.
I can understand that, I feel much the same way.  The Crane Wife was my first one too, and luckily I liked it enough to purchase their next album. The Hazards of Love (their next album) blew me away - my favorite album of '09.

I've heard The Hazards of Love once on Spotify and I think I prefer that to The Crane Wife. The vocals wasn't too good on that one either, I thought, but I remember them being not so dominating as they are on TCW. I could remember wrong though, and I may have gotten the wrong impression about TCW on first listen. Must investigate both albums closer.

Now:
Gentle Giant Free Hand album cover
First listen on CD.

Indeed! I prefer Hemispheres myself, but Permanent Waves is, as you say, a great album.
