I don't think this has been posted before.

Fairly predictable rankings, though a small surprise at the end.

It's not a surprise at all when you could read on Dream Theater's Facebook page "Hey, there's a best prog album ever poll in the Rolling Stone Magazine. Vote for us if you are a true fan!" or some kind of encouraging message for the fans :P

That was pretty fun to read.  Whatever you think of Rolling Stone lists (I don't like em, but you might), at least in this case it's a reader poll instead of those dreadful "expert team" lists.

That is pretty awesome that Dream Theater could have taken the top 5 slots.  Something about that amuses me greatly.

Too much Rush and thanks for Rolling Stone for not putting six Dream Theater albums in the list. They don't represent the best of Prog. Overall, boring list. But thank god Genesis, King Crimson and Yes to be in this list.

I like all these albums, but:
1. Scenes from a Memory can't be the best. I've listened to it, technically impressive, but there are objectively better albums imo.
2. This list should be more diverse (I'm blaming readers for that)
3. It's Rolling Stone magazine

But overall I'm pleased they even decided to do this, but my standards for Rolling Stone are very very VERY low.
edit: corrected mistake

Metropolis pt. 2 is an incredible album no doubt, glad it got attention (maybe not as much as #1 though), I wish Opeth (still life) would have fallen in one of the top slots...
Glad Ctte was high

No maudlin of the Well?  No The Mars Volta?  No Kayo Dot?  No Russian Circles?  No Iona?

Wink

Glad to see three Rush albums in there, though I wouldn't put 2112 at number 2, unless the list was "10 greatest first halves of prog albums."

Three Rush albums? That is far too many.

2112 higher than Close to the Edge? f**k this list.

In my opinion, of course. Wink

You're right, it's just that my fanboy self likes to see as much Rush as possible wherever he goes.  So even though Rush should only have 1 or 2 albums on the list (and Vapor Trails should be one of them) I'm not complaining. Wink

I thought that list could have been so much better. It seemed pretty Rush heavy and I'm not against the band by any means but there are many other bands that have had albums that were masterpieces. No Gentle Giant, ELP, Wish You Were Here was much better than Darkside of the Moon IMHO, Jethro Tull, Moody Blues, Marillion, Camel, Caravan, etc. I know there's only a list for 10 but two of the Rush albums could have been left off in favor of bands that are just as highly acclaimed. Of course, this was a reader's poll and Rolling Stone magazine. This should be enough to not take this too seriously.

Very good list... Though I like "Larks" more than "Red" by just a hair.

Not a bad list at all. I like everything on it but of course in most cases there are loads of albums I like more. Hey ho.

I will always vouch for Renaissance being somewhere up there, however.
