After listening to prog from various decades, I think one of the reasons I like Gentle Giant is that they were multi-instrumentalists. That is, one guy might play harpsichord and in the middle of the song switch to bass or clarinet or whatever.
( As opposed to 90% of "orchestral prog" which seems to mean "rock band plus a synthesyzer playing all the non-rock parts") Also, Gentle Giant had interesting counterpoint: (i.e. if there were 4 instruments playing melodies, they'd all be playing different rhythms which would fit together like jigsaw puzzle pieces). So can anyone recommend other bands that have many layers of counterpoint, or a lot of unusual instruments? Here's where I make this more difficult: it's got to have DRUMS. I've found a fair amount of pseudo-chamber-music prog or RIO that uses classical instruments and counterpoint, but most of it lacks drums, so I can't handle it. I'm hoping someone out here knows bands that do elaborate instrumentation and counterpoint with drums. I'm not looking for bands that just sound like Gentle Giant, though. It could sound like anything. Thanks for reading! |

Spock's Beard has interesting counterpoint in the vein of GG. Check them out if you didn't already.
Here an example: |

Examples? I listen to Kayo Dot but have never noticed any actual counterpoint; maybe I'm not listening hard enough. ![]() |

Check out the band GRYPHON. I can't honestly say that their first 2 releases do not have drums all the way through...so I would go with "Red Queen to Gryphon Three"...which is a little like Gentle Giant at times and does in fact employ the skills of a drummer.

Gamma Knife in particular but you have to listen a bit more closely thanks to the mix. Stained Glass and Coyote, and at least parts of Blue Lambency Downward. |

Starcastle does counterpoint. Perhaps not so much on the multi instrument front but they do have two guitarists. Sometimes they will be playing the same thing but with different timbres. Its really interesting if you are a fan of the sound of electric guitar. I'm not a drum fan so I don't really know how good the drumming is but judging by the rest of the musicianship its most likley pretty good. One thing about Starcastle is that they are TIGHT in the extreme and I'm sure that can't be done without a damn good drummer.

So its got to have drums right? Get Univers Zero's (+ their second and third) debut now! Seriously. Obviously early Magma's got everything you ask for as well. And btw: Henry Cow's got Chris Cutler on drums and Lindsay Cooper on basson/oboe! What R.I.O have you been listening to? |

If you're talking about vocals I can add Capability Brown, they have some fantastic vocal harmonies.

To all: sorry for my late response, and thanks for helping a stranger out with prog requests! I finally listened to everyone's picks.
@ polo: thanks for recommending yugen: impressive dynamics and counterpoint, but a bit too smooth for me. @Saperlipopette!: univers zero! good call! that totally fits the bill - i usually think of them as "that zeuhl band" but i didn't think about their counterpoints. @ smurph: yes and thanks! those are all good bands. I will re-listen to them and pay more attention to the different parts. @toddler: thanks for recommending Gryphon. I am currently editing the album, and I have a feeling it's going to be a great listen once i get rid of 66% of it. @dtguitarfan: thanks for recommending glass hammer! i appreciate their bombast, but couldn't find any of the real clockwork, jigsaw-puzzle counterpoint there. @sleeper: kayo dot? their stuff is a bit too precious / ethereal for me, but I just youtubed a song called "abyss hinge 2" and it is pretty good! @flyingsod: starcastle? never heard of them - but I love the vintage 70s cheese and bombast! Seems like if the vocals went away their music would be a lot of fun : layers of synths and gradually building/shifting arrangements. thanks to everyone for helping! |

That describes about 90% of the worlds music as far as I'm concerned :) I'm glad we helped you find some stuff you like though.

Well, Universe Zero is not "that zeuhl band". But Magma is.

Check out Conventum, a band out of Canada during the late 70's. They have 2 releases only. The band was complex writing sections of counterpoint utilizing 2 acoustic guitars which is often identified on the early Gentle Giant material. Examples would be the intro to Gentle Giant's "Dog's Life" and especially the counterpoint acoustic guitar playing heard on the "Playing the Fool" album during their extensive medley of tunes drawn from "Octopus". Conventum often compose on acoustic guitar bringing that style to the surface of their music. Main instruments which come to mind are violin, acoustic guitars, fuzz sustaining Frippzoid guitar, choir sounds produced on keyboards. progressive drumming,
Vocals are in French which for some people that takes getting used to. Oddball melodies with a counterpoint structure in the style of European traditional folk in small dosages, tri-tone Devilish intervals with backing progressive time signatures producing a melodic/dark musicial duel combination of the 2 within the signature lines they write. Influenced by early 70's Giant/Crimson/Genesis to small degrees. A very original prog band.
