Agreed!

What about the bassoonists? Angry

Almost no musicians were suing anyone. It was done on behalf of the labels. Anyone who thought it was going to the artists before the labels is a damned fool.

I would say naive instead of fool, but you are very right.

^ How so? This is still a legitimate discussion, right?

Not exactly sure how it works since this website has servers in Canada, but operates with a .com address (which apparently the US think it has total jurisdiction over), but going by US law, I am almost certain it is not a crime to advocate illegal downloading. Further, an insanely low number of people are prosecuted solely for downloading. A vast majority of the prosecutions are for people hosting torrent and share sites (as in this case). Way further down the line, some people are prosecuted for uploading original torrent files. And at the very bottom is someone prosecuted for merely downloading, and even then movie downloaders are sought after much more than music ones. Even with all that, courts have ruled an IP address cannot be tied to a specific individual, and that most successful prosecutions of downloading have been because of the accused's admission of guilt or settling out of court.

Wish I could find the sources for these things but I guess I didn't bookmark them. Lame.

The only real reason not to advocate illegal downloading would be because it's against the site rules, such as they are. Or if you think it's morally wrong or something.

Don't get me wrong, I'll do that from time to time as well, but I know that plenty of people take advantage of Spotify and YouTube for music, and don't bother buying it. I started a thread a couple of months ago about how most young people in this day and age do not buy music anymore, and that's always where a large percentage of music sales has come from in the past.
aye but us old guys are making up for it :)

I don't know about anyone else but as a teenager I could only afford a new album every second month or so, so I'm not sure how much I contributed to a band's wealth even then.

This is so true. Even as I use quite a bunch of my spendable income (after rent, food etc.) on music, it still is very little. So I use libraries, spotify and whatever legal ways as well to hear music I could otherwise not hear. If cd's still exist when I start working regularly, I have a huge list of records to catch up with Tongue So yeah, you can't blame young people in general, only those with careless attitudes toward the subject.

Music for profit got it's big establishment with recorded music.  It did exist before but didn't get seriously established before that. Wink

Of course things might have turned a little.... bigger, to put it in one word. But from the times of Bach, Monteverdi, and beyond, most music doesn't exist for music's sake.
