CD shops are still thriving in Japan and this is why:

"The Japanese music industry has fought hard to limit growth of the digital-music business in order to protect the CD format, and has succeeded to the degree that Japan is now the largest seller of CDs in the world,"

and

In addition to that, Sony Music Entertainment (Japan) still won't license its Japanese repertoire to iTunes Japan — reportedly because Sony doesn't like Apple infringing on its home turf.

this may be changing though, according to this article:

Music industry takes baby steps toward digital content

So THAT'S why bands always have Japanese Special Editions and such. Never understood that.

Or is that not why?

Well, I'm not an expert, but I remember hearing about Japanese Special Editions before hearing about mp3s.
I guess the record labels made these Special Editions because of high prices due to exportation to Japan.
Excuse me, sir, do you have a moment to talk about our lord and savior, Neptune, god of the Sea?

Japanese Special Editions were/are made for the Japanese market with Japanese obi, booklets and often an extra track or two. Nothing new there.  Japanese Special Edition CDs have been around since the beginning of the CD age.

Remember hanging out at the record shop on an afternoon digging thru bins and racks, discovering new music played by the music geeks behind the counter, talking music with like-minded shoppers, digging thru your collection and finding things to trade.....music used to be a hobby shared and discussed; now it's plugged into head and personalized.

I lived in Japan and loved the record shops, except they were waaaay too expensive.  The Japanese shops had shyte I'd never seen.....bootlegs, alternative pressings, bonus tracks.  I used to go in just to look at stuff I couldn't afford.....I miss the record shops!
I like to feel the suspense when you're certain you know I am there.....

Look at the post right above this.  That's one reason.  I also like to display my awesome collection of music on a shelf, something I can't do with digital downloads.  Looking through the liner notes and album covers is my last reason.  I just have to have physical copies.
