I have a Creative USB Sound Blaster that works decently well. My brother uses an M-Audio doohickey (I forget what it's officially called) that works quite well too and is specifically meant for recording.

A lot of USB or Firewire recording interfaces will work as an external soundcard.  That's what I use.

Hi, my PC is 10 years old and badly needing a replacement so I'm planning to buy a new PC soon.

I'm not a professional musician but I used to make / play music with Cubasis which is rather crappy but I may take the occasion to upgrade to some better DAW.

My current soundcard is a Creative Soundblaster Live Platinum 5.1. which although not too bad (it has MIDI etc) it's around 10 years old so I guess that there are better things right now.

Any recommendations for audio card and DAW? I don't mind spending some money in the soundcard but for the DAW I would appreciate recommendations which are not too expensive, as I say I'm not a professional musician, it's just to have some fun as an amateur and to playback the other instruments as background so I can practice playing mine on top.
