I heard this story, but it was on yahoo (where the facts often get tinkered with) and I don't know all the details, so I can't say whether the Russian government is repressing free speech or not.  Two years seems a bit much for "hooliganism" though.

Watch the blinking news then or read it on a news site.

What did you expect from a country lead by an ex-KGB spy ? And don't forget thatthis country has a very heavy communist past.

They  wouldn't have cared about blasphemy though, but that maybe a smokescreen  anyway.

This is a joke, right ?
Stalin starved people in Ukraine. In consequence, they had to eat their own children to stay alive.
From 1917 to 1980, the communist party is responsible for 120 milion deaths.

I hate when people living in "western"countries talk about how  life was good in countries with communist government. My parents left Poland during the Jaruzelski years, mainly because my father was jailed for having given his opinion on the government's politics (yes, freedom of speech was banned).

And I hate even more people who wear T-shirts or other goods bearing the face of the terrorist Che Guevera (a physician who kills people, isn't that inconsistent ?).

Paul McCartney and Madonna among others in the music world are demanding their release from prison.
And now it's Sting joining in as well.

Honestly, I've never heard of Bachar al-Assad until you mentioned him.

^
Most of today's musical businessmen/women as you mentioned supported the "red" governments (understand communism) and now they protest against the decision taken in a country conducted by people who previously had key functions in the communist USSR.
these personalities have a short memory or they are there only to show people that they are still present and their "good actions" will therefore increase their album sales
