Topic: Dick or David? Posted: August 19 2012 at 04:22 |
Well. Two amazing persons and influential sax players with a similar style, e.g. simultaneous playing on 2 saxophones. Dick Heckstall-Smith (1934-2004) was always rather to Jazz and Blues, on the other hand David Jackson (1947) tends to Eclectic Prog.

Dick Heckstall-Smith was not only a better player than David Jackson (or practically anyone else for that matter) but he played in Colosseum, one of the most gifted bands in the early prog scene.

This. Dick also did a great solo album called A Story Ended in '72.

An album I've always meant to listen to, but never have.
I would also say that Jackson is actually an excellent player (though I don't like VDGG because of Hamill's vocal and compositional style) but Heckstall Smith is a true virtuoso.

Through a technical context, and just as an overall player, Dick is much more accomplished in my opinion, but Jackson was such a unique asset to VDGG's music and motif - integral. We would have never had songs like The Sleepwalkers, A Plague Of Lighthouse Keepers and Emperor In His War Room if it wasn't for Jackson's knack of gloomy, ambient Sax and Flute. Not to mention, he had some pretty tasty licks himself.

I voted for Dick. I'm not just a huge fan of Blues, thus I don't have his early records with Korner and Mayall. But - Colosseum is a higher level! Accomplished mixture of Blues, Jazz and Hard Rock, perfectly played by all excellent musicians.
On the other hand, I've never understood to a dark, would-be philosophical and eclectic style of Van der Graaf Generator. Actually, I like only Pawn Hearts unreservedly.

This may be the first time we've ever agreed!
