Topic: Top 10 Rick Wakeman (solo) albumsPosted: August 21 2012 at 13:36 |

Looking at the reviews of Rick Wakeman albums in Prog Archives, I notice that as an artist, he elicits very conflicting opinions. Albums such as 'The Six Wives...', 'Criminal Record', 'Journey...', 'The Myths and Legends of King Arthur...' and 'No Earthly Connection' generally get consistently high ratings (deservedly so!). However, many of his other albums are often simultaneously heralded as either masterpieces or complete rubbish. Many of the albums get both five star and one star ratings.
Recently I started to collect Rick Wakeman's solo albums, focusing more on his rock (rather than new age) output. This has been largely very rewarding, but also a little frustrating. There is a strong sense that quantity takes priority over quality, but having said that, even the weaker albums contain some real gems. In many top tens, I think the first 5 will probably be quite predictable (the albums mentioned in my first paragraph). However the second half of the lists will, I hope. be quite enlightening. Anyway, here's my top 10: 1. The Six Wives of Henry VIII 2. Criminal Record 3. The Myths and Legends of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table 4. Retro 5. Out There 6. Retro II 7. Time Machine 8. Can You Hear Me 9. No Expense Spared 10. Out of the Blue (live album)

Same as Snowie, I would struggle with ten, but my favourite is Criminal Record, followed by Six Wives, and Arthur. I also have a soft spot for Out There.

The whole album is really very good - worthy of 4 to 4 and a half stars in my opinion.

Six Wives
Criminal Record
King Arthur
Retro 1
Retro 2
and thats it really. Out There doesn't do much for me and neither does Journey To The Centre Of The Earth 1 or 2. The New Age stuff is a bit aimless imo
Rick has released a lot of albums (100+ I believe if you count 'official bootlegs' and live recordings).
DVD wise I would strongly recommend Six Wives performed at Hampton Court (ft Brian Blessed). Super stuff and available in Blue Ray format as well.

Hah, same. I plan to get more in the future, just haven't been that interested lately. Rick's one of my favourite keyboardists of course, and those albums are the reason why -a virtuosic master. |

Oh, I would need some time to put them in order, but I do like some albums besides the big 3 or five ones. Out There is the most notable one.

I'm not a huge Wakeman fan but there is one solo I really like and wasn't mentioned. It's out of a Strawbs live album Just A Collection Of Antiques & Curios FROM 1971. 'Where Is This Dream Of Your Youth'

Criminal Record is my favourite. Not really keen on many of the others in total, though I like some individual tracks from each. Couldn't manage a top ten though.
