In my opinion, this is the hardest one.
Before hearing Geddy, I rarely heard bass in music. But the way Geddy playsm, it opened everything up for me. He can play keys to, so that's a +. On the other side, things Wetton did in King Crimson are stellar. And I like his voice more than Lee's. I'll not vote here, but I think I slightly (and very slightly) prefer Mr Wetton, but not enough to vote for him over Ged. EDIT: It's funny. It seems I'm comparing Rush and KC again (last poll was Bruford/Peart). Well, I initially thought of comparing Lee with Ray Shulman, but I thought that it would somehow be unfair to Mr Ray (not as popular as Ged, so the winner is clear). In the end, I decided to go with Wetton, because there are many people here who love him, so there might be more balance.

Wetton's good, but Geddy Lee is a bass playing god, and has a voice like no others.

I have to go with Geddy on this one, as a bass player only. For vocals, I would vote Wetton.

For all round talent: singing, songwriting and multi-instrumentalist I go with John Wetton
Just for bass I might go with Lee.

Geddy's playing with John's voice would be the best.
Given that that's not gonna happen I voted for Geddy, he has had a more consistent career altough I can't tell how much of Rush's great music is due to his contribution as composer.

Note: this is not bass-only. You should take all the aspects into consideration.

Geddy Lee! For vocals, bass playing, and fashion sense.

I prefer Wetton as a singer, even then i not sure i prefer him to Geddy Lee's singing just because of the amount of Rush CD's i listen to compared to UK, and the KC albums he did.
As a bass player - Geddy by light years, it is a musician poll anyway.

Geddy Lee for his bass playing. As a singer, I like John Wetton just a bit more.

John have a better bass sound, over decent techniquw, warmer voice, and overall a good preformer, so i vote for him, he is more captivative but Geddy is also a stellar bass player with a uniqie flare on the insturment, and wonderfull fills and overall flexibilaty on the bass and a solid sound, but he aint got the growl which John produced on songs like Fallen Angel and Starless
this is my favourite bass song by Wetton, the tone is fantastic |

I thought Lee was a far better bass player than Wetton until I saw this:
Now I can't split them; they're both brilliant bass players and good vocalists.

There is a similar case like a previous Bruford/Peart fight: Geddy's bass playing is technically perfect, but somewhat without soul, unlike John. Geddy is too tightly connected with only one band - Rush, while John is much more versatile. Geddy's vocals are rather annoying in heights, John's timbre isn't just clear but still pleasant.
So, John it is. Edited by Gandalff - September 04 2012 at 01:26 |

John Wetton for his voice which is one of my favourites but he is also an excellent bassist. Wetton would get in my list of ten bassists but Lee wouldn't be in my list of vocalists.

Geddy for me by just a little. While I think Wetton has a better voice and is a solid bass player, I just am always blown away by Lee's playing, his voice did get better over time-listen to 2112 and then Moving Pictures and you can hear the improvement-and I just enjoy Rush more than KC.

Very nice version indeed.
I think that besides technical capabilities a lot goes about their bass playing style, Geddy plays more like a soloist, for sure he sets the background rythm and tone but very frequently it's like he understands bass more like a guitarist would, while John plays more tradional bass lines, even if they can be technically great they are "more bass-like" while Geddy's are more "guitar-like" if you know what I mean.
Then a lot depends on which style of bass playing you prefer, rather than on who of them is "better".
