Hello everyone.
I recently listened to a lot of Neal Morse's solo albums and their songs.
I was always impressed with his work in Transatlantic. So I wanted to see how his solo work was.
And I have to say, I am very impressed.
His lyric writing is immaculate; you can see his commitment, dedication and passion in his lyrics.
His songwriting is equally brilliant; I thought he was a good keyboard player only and I expected more and more of vocal based songs with little focus on instrumental brilliance.
But I was proved wrong. His albums have amazing playing.
I am equally surprised his guitar playing skills are also very good like his keyboarding skills.
The guitar work in Sola Scriptura is just mouth watering.
Also, I became a born again religious person thanks to Neal Morse. Smile
His lyric writing, song writing, technical playing, orchestration are all really top notch and I am surprised he is the brainwork of all the albums which are typically 50-100 mins long (Testimony as a whole is a 120 min EPIC and it was continued in Testimony 2 which is also another 120 min EPIC!!! I dont think any single person can come up with such a song!)
All in all, he has turned into becoming one of my favourite and respected prog musicians in the world. And importantly, one of the few good souls in this earth whom I look upon.

You should find this interesting
 
The guy is a modern day ProgGod  (pun intendedTongue) but some people are put off by the lyrics.I like him a lot. One and Sola Scriptura are my favourite albums. The latest is also excellent.

My bad.
Yeah, many people are put off by his lyrics.
But I feel they carry a lot of depth and meaning and passion.
Brings a chill in my spine every time I hear his intense vocal parts.

I like his music and what he stands for, but unfortunately have never appreciated his voice - a bit whiny for me.  So unfortunately because of that, I don't really listen to his solo stuff.

The only Neal Morse solo album I've heard is Sola Scriptura, and although I think it's a good album, I just could never get into it.  One of his epics is enough before I get tired of the music.  He seems to me to be an excellent musician with good singing, playing, and songwriting skills, but his music just isn't my cup of tea.

I don't like his lyrics, either (at least those on Sola Scriptura).  It's nothing to do with the subject matter (I'm a Christian and a Lutheran too, so you'd think I'd enjoy them); it's just that I consider the lyrics very poorly written.

EDIT:  To clarify, I don't want anyone to think that my somewhat negative post was meant to denote any sort of dislike for Neal Morse.  I do like his music, it's just low on the spectrum of my likes.  To give an illustration: I have Sola Scriptura on my Ipod, because I like it.  But, if I had to delete things off my Ipod to make room for, say, the complete Toby Driver discography, Sola Scriptura would be one of the first ones to go.

In my opinion Neal Morse is possible the most underated artist in prog rock. The man is a musical genius.
 
His keyboard and guitar work is amazing. His vocals are solid. But the lyrics are the weak point for me. Quite possibly because of the whole religious theme. Though I find that I pay more attention to the melodies rather than the lyrics, and nobody can write a better melody than Mr Morse.
 
My favourite album of all time (at the moment) is 'Snow' by Spocks Beard. Please say you have listened to this?!...
 
Also... How does the guy write so many albums?... Im in a band and can only just get an album out ever 4 years....

I have only really started to appreciate Morse outside of Spocks Beard this year via Transatlantic & have to say, the man is a one man prog-rock revival...
