Having skimmed through most of the Yes discography tonight I can't really find anything in their cataglogue that works as well as these two. I listened to some of Anderson's Toltec (a similar native american vibe which sits with Avatar's visuals nicely) but really didn't like it, he seems to have moved away from a lot of what I like about his music and towards something too lyrical and more pop-ish. Any suggestions for other albums with a similar sound to Sunhillow/ Relayer?

For me, the movie Avatar should be matched to Yes and Yes related music, indeed. I mean, just look at their covers. However, I would say that the album that would fit the movie the best would be Close to the Edge (even the name goed well with the floating iselands), though I must confess I haven't heard Olias yet, so I wouldn't know if it would fit better. My feeling is that it would work nicely to use more than one album, I may suggest to try using Close to the Edge, Olias, and the song "The Gates of Delirium" from relayer, at least. Oh yeah, and perhaps the song "Starship Trooper" would work nicely too, check it out. I feel the parts of the song "Close to the Edge" where the "I get up, I get down" parts are being sung would work nicely on the parts in which the main character is learning to fly (just forgot his name). And you and I may work nicely with the parts that are somewhat more romantic. "Gates of Delirium" would be perfect for the battle scenes. "Starship Trooper" for the parts in which the human army arrive. Of course, I don't have any idea about how to use the Olias parts.

That would cool as sh*t! Make the movie so much better. Beautiful idea!

...

This is the main reason why I will not see that film ... Jim Cameron is the proto-typical Hollywood rip-off artist ... and he is not big enough and good enough to credit the real artist for the inspiration ... the whole design is almost a complete copy of rip off of Dean's books and art!

But I think that Dean will be remembered 500 years from now and Jim Cameron won't ... so no worries there ... go ahead thief ... steal all you want!

It would have been great too if they had gotten Roger Dean to desing the world too. That would have been a Yes dream come true.

Oh yeah, and since you are into this kind of things, I might sugest a possible next project, the film "Excalibur" matched to the Rick Wakeman album "Myths and Legends of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table". Though it would have the problem that Sir Gallahad is mentioned in Wakeman's album, while he is omitted from the film. I still wish that an adequate film (or trilogy of films) would be released about King Arthur... and it would be a dream if Wakeman's music were used in such a project (adapted, of course, for a film format).

Well it's an interesting topic for a forum: sex in prog. Things like Gong's 'Magick Sister', or even Dream Theater's 'Home'. Or perhaps Comus is you're wandering down a different road. I wonder if it's been done before?

I couldn't help it ... too much of that "fantasy" stuff is just based on lyrics that have no story behind it, and sometimes they are just a song in the middle of the rest ... so I wanted to see a few feathers flying around for fun!

All in all, the number of bands that did "fantasy" stuff is insane ... but I'm not sure that the folks in this thread really want that list ... I mean .. there's fantasy ... and then there's talk! ... and I am pretty sure that those that talk ... don't usually know what a real fantasy is ... and hopefully they are not replacing the real thing with a piece of music ... now, that would be bad!

But I love the music that CREATES a/any fantasy ... a lot better! AND, not just some lyrics that play with "let's pretend" concepts and ideas!

Hey DOC, is the Terra Incognita album feature JAMES LABRIE on it? I've been meaning to check that one out for quite a while now.

Oh got another one. PYRAMAZE's THE MELANCHOLY BEAST. it's a pure D&D type album. Very entertaining. Actually, there is a track on the album called LEGEND and it's based on the 1986 film by RIDLEY SCOTT staring TOM CRUISE.
Check that one out. Also, the opening track SLEEPY HOLLOW is an epic 80's hair metal inspired track dealing with the terror and horror of ICABOD CRANE , THE HEADLESS HORSEMAN.

Give it a go. The album altogether is a lot of fun. :)

Oh yeah!!! RELAYER! That's an excellent choice. Sometimes I stare at the album cover while listening to the Gates Of Delerium. it's quite a nice headspace I must say. Good choice.

one more artist you should look into is AYREON. major fantasy themed albums with a little bit of a space rock element to the overall sound. Albums like 0110010100, the electric castle and star 1 are your best bet for what you are looking for sound wise and adventure wise as well. Take care progger!

Thanks for all the replies. :) Slowly making my way through all the suggestions. So far the best match has been Jon Anderson's Olias of Sunhillow, the atmosphere and many of the lyrics match perfectly with Avatar's aesthetic. The only problem is its not a very exciting album; beautiful, atmospheric, wonderful to listen to, but it doesn't fit themore tense scenes of the movie. I'm wondering if it would be too blasphamous to mix up a few albums, use some exciting tracks for the action and the more etherial tracks for the scenes of the planet/ forrests/ natives. I'd guess this is a bit of a no-no, prog rock seems to be about albums more than single tracks, although if I can use more material by the same artist (Anderson/Yes) I think it could blend quite well and work out better for my overall project.

Try Tangerine Dream Stratosfear, a very visual album.

Ok. So I know a lot of religious zealots would have my head for saying this but SAVIOUR MACHINE's LEGEND PT 1,2,3 are great conceptual fantasy/mythical albums. It deals with the entire story of The book of Revalations, which is the last chapter in the bible via 2nd testament. Say what you will, but Revalations is nothing more than a really great story to me and nothing else. Anyway, check out those 3 albums. They are incredible and offer up some of the greatest music that I've ever heard.

Ooh, I've been curious about that band for years and been kind on intimidated trying to figure out where to start! Is there a particular album you would recommend to a newbie looking to give them a try, Progbethyname?!

Hello my friend, SAVIOUR MACHINE's discography in itself is a connected body of work. They have only 5 studio releases. You really can't cut any corners with this terrific band. A lot of people feel that their LEGEND trilogy really defines them as a band. I guess if you wanted to jump to the heart of Saviour Machine's most advanced work you could start with LEGEND Pt 1, then 2 and then 3. I can't stress this enough, but you must listen to these albums in order. One last thing, ENJOY! It's amazing stuff, but don't leave out their other first 2 releases (SAVIOR MACHINE 1&2)
