Topic: Steve Hackett - Genesis Revisited II Posted: October 27 2012 at 10:03 |
I just got Steve Hackett's Genesis Revisited II in the mail yesterday. Overall thumbs up I say. I really like it on the instrumental side, although some of the dynamic contrasts seemed to get lost with the compression. The guitar work really cooked and never got lost in the mix. Some of the vocals will take some getting used to for me. What does everyone else think about it?

My initial impression is that it is not as adventurous as GR1. This time around it seems more like a covers album than one of interpretations. Great songs of course and a highly enjoyable double CD set..

Greatly enjoyed my first hearing of this record. Yes, you will need to get used to some of the vocals, but I think nobody will expect a copycat of the songs. In that case better stick to the originals. But I have two dreams: Having a DVD of Genesis revisited II, but including Firth of Fifth and Cinema show and that DVD concert mastered by Steven Wilson (that is if you cannot actually go to one of his tours in Europe.) Can Utility and the coast liners and Supper's ready were my two favorites.

Steve's website has announced two shows in Fort Lauderdale, Florida March 25th and 30th. Although I'll be trying, it still may not be close enough for me to get to (I'm over in Oklahoma), but others may be more fortunate. The website said other US dates might be announced too.

I loved it. Steve Hackett apparently didn't want to change them as much this time around, and just kind of wanted to present them more as he imagined them when he recorded them originally. He said that he thinks the original recordings were rushed and the sound quality suffered. He mentioned that his guitar sounded very low in the mix on many songs in their original recordings.

It fit in really good too. I wonder how long he wanted to do that.

Enjoyable, yes, on account of the source material being quite good. But overall I don't really see why this album was deemed necessary enough to produce. Not bad, but I can live without it.

This is exactly what I think! But I must admit: this album is slowly growing on me

I love the music but some of the vocals were almost painful to listen to imo.

I have the same problem. I'm really really struggling with a couple vocals. I wish he just went with John Wetton and/or he himself. Steve did a great job on Revisited I on Fountain of Salmacis in my opinion.

Love this album. There are some moments where I Cringe like in Supper's REady when the singer sings "{grass" ,the American way which makes the bit sound more daggy. Overall ,once you get over the original singing and treat this material as it's own entity,it grows on me more. The drumming doesn't have Phil's verve and the drums sound very bland unlike the distinctive tone of alot of prog drummers back in the day. Being a drummer ,I was mostly critical of this but then again ,like the vocals, you have to treat it without having the thought of the originals in your mind. It sounds much bigger and crisper than the older numbers. My favs are Suppers Ready and The Musical Box. Good on Steve Hackett for still having fond memories of the past while the others try to hide all that great material under the carpet. Genesis pre 1980 was some of the best music made on the planet.

I listened to it sone more. I definitely like: Horizons Fly on a Windshield Broadway Melody of 1974 The Musical Box Can-utility and the Coastliners Blood on the Rooftops The Return of the Giant Hogweed Entangled Unquiet Slumbers for the Sleepers... ...In that Quiet Earth A Tower Struck Down (better than the original) Camino Royale Shadow of the Hierophant -Disappointed with the vocal on Chamber of 32 Doors -Not crazy about the vocal on Suppers Ready, but the instrumentals are better than the original. The transitions seem less fractured, but at the same time it doesn't have the dynamic contrasts of the original. -The Lamia is one of my all time favorites and the vocal here just kills it for me. The singer needs to quit showing off his operatic quality and remember he's supposed to be telling a story. The bridge sections are not layered with as many keyboard lines as the original, I don't think. I'll have to put on the earphones and count. The guitar lead is reworked without the arpeggio that I desperately practiced so hard to learn when started learning guitar. I think it's a really excellent guitar lead and an interesting re-interpretation, but the original lead is still hard to beat. -I need to listen to Dancing with the Moonlit Knight a little more. -I don't like the vocal on Eleventh Earl of Mar, but then again I didn't like the original vocal either. The instrumentals are fabulous, though. -Ripples? I will give this vocal a chance to grow on me.

Enjoying it. I prefer this to the original revisited which I found enjoyable but changed too much. With revisited II there are some nice new touches. I like the guitar under the keyboards in apocalypse in 9/8.

I never saw this album or the first volume Genesis Revisited as replacements or substitutions to the original Genesis albums. But that said, I love both Genesis Revisited and II. Anytime I can get to hear a group of musicians pull off The Eleventh Earl Of Mar - I'm on board. Good stuff! I recommend it.
