So I was recently re-watching the 1978 Dawn Of The Dead and realised the soundtrack was very proggy. Found out later it was the band Goblin who had done several other italian horror soundtracks.

Are there any other italian prog bands that do soundtracks like this?

Any particular favourites?

(Was also wondering if any of these films are any good)

Hey Bruce!

Try this total highest recommendation:

http://www.progarchives.com/album.asp?id=3553

Morte Macabre - Synphonic Holocaust - Features members of Landberk, Anglagard, Anekdoten, etc, it's an eerie all instrumental Mellotron fuelled monster of an album, comprised of reinterpretations of horror soundtrack pieces and original tracks.

A total clasic - and probably more consistent than even some Goblin albums!

Shame they've so far recorded only the one album!

Good call, Hellogoodbye Ducky!

I should have mentioned also in my post that the Morte Macabre album is not actually Italian! So to make up for it, here's a proper Italian horror suggestion:

L'OMBRA DELLA SERA - L'Ombra Della Sera

http://www.progarchives.com/album.asp?id=37581

Similar to the Morte Macabre album, but not quite as memorable! Damn nice, though, but I'm still waiting on that proposed LP version that never seemed to happen!

Oh, Finn, our beloved Jacula!!!

What a coincidence, I'm just making my way through the Antonius Rex catalogue and putting some reviews together! It's not quite the extended second Jacula review I've stil promised you, but that's taking longer to listen to over and over than I expected!

Can't believe I didn't think of the Jacula albums right off either!

Just today I was looking at A.Rex's website and the new album is out 12.12.12!! Looking so forward to that!!

I've only seen Dario Argento's Inferno as Keith Emerson did the soundtrack. The music is way better than the film with some great prog moments.

Interestingly Goblin have done a cover of the Emerson track

Its rather good!

Another sugestion I didn't think of until now, thanks to Todd from the Italian prog thread for the reminder!

Nicklas Barker - `El Ultimo Fin de Semana' soundtrack

http://www.progarchives.com/album.asp?id=34592

It sort of compliments the Morte Macabre album, as Barker was one the main members on that project.

He, of course, is one of the members of superb prog band Anekdoten, that should be chekced out by everyone. They've just goten better with every album!

Richard, I can back you up about the soundtrack, it's rather good! There was a recent LP/CD reissue of it, and I'm kind of surprised that I didn't snap it up. I don't recall a second of the music now, just that it was surprisingly decent. Havent't seen the movie, though!

Have to admit I was commenting on the cover by Goblin (now sadly withdrawn from youtube due to copyright issues)

The soundtrack album is also good but like a lot of soundtrack albums lacks flow. It has three great Emerson tracks - Mater Tenerbrarum, Taxi Ride and Cigs Ices Etc. Its worth getting for those. The rest is slightly generic horror film music with some nice composed themes and orchestral arrangements from Godfey Salmon I believe. Nighthawks was a better soundtrack album imo.

I should have specified that I was also interested in any (horror) films with particularly prog soundtracks , for me the dawn of the dead soundtrack made the film ten times more enjoyable

Some great suggestions here though!

About mentioned Keith Emerson, was the linked song to other movie than "La Chiesa", directed by Michele Soavi and produced by Dario Argento? I think that quite moody horror film, though not as interesting as Argento's classics. I remember some great effects done with fast puppets replacing people through fast film cuts.

l love Fabio Frizzi, and would heartily recommend The Beyond, as well as some others by him.  He has collaborated with Goblin before.

There are also some Ennio Morricone soundtracks worth suggesting.

The link was to the film Inferno as directed by Argento

La Chiesa (The Church) had a soundtrack that had another artist as well as Emerson contributing to it. The title track was Emersons though.
I looked for a link to the theme and found the entire film instead!

Goblin did several giallo soundtracks, most famous being Profondo Rosso (Deep Red), Suspiria, Tenebre and Phenomena.

also here are a couple of not so famous music themes from them :)

That voice of Area's vocalist will scare the bejesus out of you.
