This is exactly what Syd was making. He was fascinated by fairy tales and nursery rhymes. He was a 360° artist. The sound of the words was sometimes more important than their meanings (Mathilda Mother: "wondering and Dreaming, the words had different meanings"). Think to the sound of  "floating down the sound resounds around the icy waters underground".  This is genius!

I do get this, and I do not undervalue Syd (rest in peace). The poll question was, however, 'Which album do you prefer'. Had the question been, 'Which album  was more mold-breaking in the year of its release', I'd have gone for "Popper" of course.

That's why there's almost twice as many votes for Piper, right? Ah yes it all makes sense now... Maybe I need to go puff on my tobacco pipe and grab a monocle so I can be 'sophisticated' and 'mature' enough to understand why TDB isn't boring as hell. :P

No, it doesn't, which makes your comment barely relevant to what Wanorak said. He said:

... and he did not say anything specific about the number of votes for A Piper or the number of votes for TDB.

Can't we all just bang a gong?

~Rodney "King" Bolan

Hey, wait, I think I prefer Piper. I'm sure I do. But I prefer The Final Cut over both of these two.

how was my comment barely relevant? He said "so many people have voted for TDB because it's better" and i'm pointing out that doesn't make much sense because WAY MORE people have voted for Piper.

either way. I don't really care what people like. You're free to dig what you dig. It just annoys me when people keep coming in this thread posting their opinions like it's scientific fact. I haven't reviewed every post of mine in this thread but I feel like I've been good at sticking to "I like Piper cause of ____ and I don't like TDB cause of ____" rather than just acting like what I think is law somehow

Sumdeus, it's just shows that there's no accounting for taste Just like everybody voting for Grendel in the Marillion epic. Some people seem to want to live in the past, even when more recent works by artists are better than their old works!!

Yes, people's tastes are personal and I respect that. What I don't like on this site is people voting for Marillion or Genesis or whoever and voting for Fish or Gabriel or whoever just because it's them and not giving the other singers their proper due Especially when Collins and Hogarth are far superior vocalists IMO and others. They may not be theatrical, but they SING better!

I too like Collins as a singer much more than Gabriel, whom for me is not good at all. I like Fish a bit better, though, but I still find him annoying sometimes; though I still don't know any Hogarth era Marillion in order to compare both singers. However, I still love Gabriel era Genesis more than Collins era Genesis, and I don't know about Hogarth era Marillion, but can't imagine liking it better than Fish era. As for this thread, I have stated before that I like The Division Bell much better than Piper... as a matter of fact, I find TDB among my favourite Pink Floyd albums, just behind Animals and Wish you were Here, and perhaps even above Dark Side.

Piper was groundbreaking.  The Division Bell was OK though.
Released date are often when it it impacted you but recorded dates are when it really happened...
