Thanks for the post, interesting interview. I will have to listen now for the big sound change that no one knew about or discovered in CTTE.
No Squire, one of the band members (cant remember who) said Chris was always late for rehearsal, looks like for interviews too...

You're thinking of Bill Bruford. Bruford was always punctual (being a jazz drummer, it's no surprise that he has a good concept of time). He viewed being late to practice as one of the most disrespectful things you could do to your bandmates, and I kind of agree. I believe he and Squire didn't like each other very much at all. I think all the guys in that band lived together and used to drink ALOT....and I think after a show one night, Bruford and Squire got into a fistfight, probably a drunken one. Tensions in bands tend to build up. Especially if your bandmate is also your roommate. Been there, done that myself.

I'm sure that a book could be written about the many flats shared by the prog musicians in London back in the day! Peter Banks and Bob Fripp shared a flat, and Chris Squire & Ray Bennett of Flash did as well. This is a great interview with Pete Banks where he reminisces about those years: And Robert Fripp ended up living with you in the same flat in Fulham where you used to live with Yes before. Is that right? Yes, when Flash we were rehearsing in '72. That was a strange thing when Robert Fripp moved in because Bill (Bruford) was the last one who moved out and that was a little bit strange because Bill and I we were still sharing this flat along with his girlfriend and my girlfriend, and I actually got fired from Yes, and it was a bit of a strange thing. If you listen closely, you can hear common influences in the styles of flatmates! Squire and Bennett both used the plectrum/Rotosound/Rickenbacker bass technique, I wonder if they didn't develop it jointly? And Banks and Fripp share many common guitar traits....jazz, fuzztone, etc. Edited by cstack3 - November 30 2012 at 00:28 |
