Soft Machine - Land of Cockayne - opinions on this one, fellas?
I listened to Softs the other day and I thought about stopping on this one, but I'll listen to this one then.Since you already answered about Antartica, what do you think of Hypothesis? I listened this one and The Dragon a some months ago and I really liked them.

Sam, I too kind of dismissed `Land of Cockayne', even though reflecting back it was the first Soft Machine album I bought! In the review I'll post later on, I mention that it got lost in my LP collection and I simply forgot about it until very recently, and after a few spins, I thought `This is actually rather good...'', at least for what it is. Will post my review a little later on today. I actually don't have a CD or LP of either `Softs' or `Bundles'', so I sadly haven't been able to hear them in years!

`Hypothesis'...I used to hate it. Vangelis' `The Dragon' is one of my absolute favourites, an album I spin almost every week that still has the same effect on me as when I first discovered it. When I heard `Hypothesis', I was initially quite hostile and disappointed that it sounded nothing like my favourite album, even though I think it had many of the same players on it. But when a friend on here, Dave (Guldbamsen) gave it a great review, I came across a beautiful pristine LP of it at a record fair and decided to give it a new chance.

What can I say....now I think it's really rather good, even if it is a little schizophrenic! It's somewhat maddening, as it seems to change direction every few seconds, but there's a lovely murky dirty jazzy sound throughout I enjoy! I think I'll give it a review before too long!

Luca, I really enjoy `Land of Cockayne' too, very nicely played for what it is! I'll be posting a positive review in the next day or so.

I like `Antactica' as well...no classic, and I prefer his Seventies works, but it's atmospheric and easy to listen to. One of two slightly darker moments were appreciated as well. I'll post a review of that a day after the Soft Machine one.

Oh incredible album!

Awesome guitar and bass playing (that sounds too much like Yes but I don't care Tongue) and lots of Mellotron: what's not to like? Big smile
