Steven Wilson - the Raven That Refused to Sing (and Other Stories)

Very enjoyable and eclectic album but somehow seems torn between balancing melodic lyrical songwriting against technical instrumental ideas. The textures employed scream Prog (Tron, analogue synths, electric piano, Hammond organ etc) but as is the norm for anything from Wilson, the music is all highly original and inhabits a melodic and harmonic realm inimitably his own. Provisionally ****

Morphine - the Best of

This was something of a surprise to your flea bitten correspondent as I had never even heard of this trio before stumbling on a track quite by accident on You Tube. (Bucna)
Reminded me in places of a more laconic Violent Femmes but in the main excellent.
Sumptuously recorded lowbrow textures but slyly highbrow lyrical themes.
Provisionally ****

Prefab Sprout - Swoon
Their debut, albeit the idea of the Sprouts being a collaborative project was very short lived as Paddy McAloon held all the aces in their marked pack. A late starter for rock at 27 it's still remarkable that such a young man could have penned these hauntingly beautiful but world weary songs.

Should a love be tender, and bleed out loud?
Or be tougher than tough, and prouder than proud.
If I'm troubled by every folding of your skirt,
am I guilty of every male inflicted hurt?
But I don't know how to describe the Modern Rose,
When I can't refer to her shape against her clothes.
With the fever of purple prose.

Despite the horrible boxy production and keyboard textures that sound like they were sourced from a doting Mum's Argos catalog, one of the most stunning debut albums I've ever heard. Yes, Steve McQueen sounded bigger, bolder and more confident but the singing and songwriting here is unmatched throughout their entire discography. Blame Thomas Dolby for their subsequent demise if you like (I do)

the Cure - Disintegration
Perhaps the last indispensable Cure album which might be considered the second part of a trilogy book-ended by Pornography and Bloodflowers. Roger O'Donnell's keyboards sound cavernous on this album and lend proceedings their widescreen cinematic gothic feel. After this for me they just starting making the same album every four years or so.

The Mighty Lemon Drops - World Without End

A rather limited repertoire but what they did well they did brilliantly. Together with their frankly stupid name, they've often been charged with slavishly echoing the Bunnymen but that's both unduly harsh and very wide of the mark. One of the few singers I can recall with a pronounced lisp whose voice I adore.
