I thought the same: he plays the guitar more comfortably on this one.The guitar riff on the first track reminds me of Another Brick in the Wall Pt.1.I think it's Porcupine Tree's Zeit: it's a double album and not everyone gets it LOL

From what I recall, Wilson claimed it was more ripped-off from some Neu track. I (probably stupidly) ditched those albums over fifteen years ago now, so I don't recall which track he was talking about. I do recall vaguely that they were quite similar though!

Have you heard the PT album `Metanoia'? It's comprised of recordings from the `Signify' sessions, and it's totally instrumental and improvised. Very cool stuff, quite electronic and Kraut-y in a few spots too! You'll either totally dig the album or not at all!

Here you go, Meltdowner, this is the album:

In my lowly opinion, the wealth of bad reviews and 3 star overall rating is an effing disgrace! Unfortunately, I find a lot of their earlier albums do not get the respect they deserve, because many more fans come to them from having first gotten to know P.Tree from their later heavy period....so they hear all these psychedelic, trance, improvised, ambient early gems and go `Where's the metal??'....

I find their heavy period less interesting then the the psychedelic one, although I like both periods. Maybe it's because I started to listen to them from On the Sunday of Life. I remember my first listen: I was writing a boring report and it sudenly became interesting LOL
I listen a lot of music while I'm working. Smile

I'm the same....I enjoy the heavy period, but I originally started with `The Sky Moves Sideways' (I read about the band in an old Pink FLoyd fanzine called `Brain Damage'), but when `Signify' came out - WOW...I had never heard progressive rock in a modern setting down so well. It's still my favourite album from them, a perfect mix of dark ambience, electronic/dance elements, gothic rock, psychedelic, improvisation, as well as thoughtful lyrics.

So that meant watching them head through that almost `indie-rock' phase with `Stupid Dream/Lightbulb Sun', and then into the heavier period.

I sadly miss the more varied, thoughtful and intricate drumming of Chris Maitland too.

There's are still some great song on these albums, like Tinto Brass or Russia on Ice.
What I think is the sad part is there's no live DVD from the psychedelic period Unhappy

Crap, it kind of came across like I didn't like that period! I love those two albums you mentioned, perfect marriage of proggy intelligence with subllime poppier structures!

Totally agree about the lack of footage....even the few DVD boots I've got mostly start from `In Absentia' era.

What they should do is some `live in a studio' performances of just material from those early days!

This has been a jazzy Sunday:

Charles Mingus - The Black Saint And The Sinner Lady
John Coltrane - A Love Supreme
Miles Davis - Nefertiti
Miles Davis - Filles De Kilimanjaro
Krzysztof Komeda - Astigmatic
Charles Mingus - The Black Saint And The Sinner Lady (again)
Lee Morgan - Search For The New Land
Miles Davis - In A Silent Way
John Coltrane - Blue Train
Miles Davis - Kind Of Blue
Dave Brubeck - Time Out
Dave Brubeck - Brubeck Time (now)

Kara - Full Bloom (for Kpop it's real good. More mainstream pop should be this. It's neat how so much stuff is thrown into a three minute track like "Damaged Lady" while retaining strong melodic hooks. Feels like a lot of effort was put into this.)

SWANS - Cop (Haven't heard this in a while. The opening track sounds like a major influence on sludge metal. For a lot of later cuts the guitar plays in a more percussive style. A shambling monolith that admittedly becomes a chore after a half hour. Hits really strong at first though.)

I started with a family-friendly playlist

The Bevis Frond - Valedictory Songs (this was mostly before the family came into the picture, lol)
Crosby Stils and Nash - s.t.
Chicago VIII  (a bit heavy on the Cetera, but some great Kath moments too)
Queen - Live Killers

and then later on when I had time alone
Brian Jonestown Massacre - some demos for the upcoming album
followed by a bit from some live radio sessions, followed by their album "...And This is Our Music", all of which really zoned me out in a good way.

It's kind of nice, Sagi, really melodic and pleasant mostly instrumental stuff...but damn the compositions are repetitive, and most of them go about three times as long as they should.

I bought it recenty in an odd double CD collection that also had this album with it (perhaps you've heard it?):

M.Efekt - Svitanie

http://www.progarchives.com/album.asp?id=7072

Will try and listen to that one at work tonight.
