You know I always had a tough time with this album, if I remember correctly as fine as that guitar player is he just doesn't stop or cools down for a second. It does has its moments but that album just tires me, if there's an album with too much soloing it's this one.

You know, Sagi, I don't find the constant soloing obnoxious on this one! I think the album is overloaded with really strong melodic passages, so it never sounds like...`guitar masturbation'! It also helps that I realy love his tone, if the guitar sound would have been like, say, something from the Ozric Tentacles, I would have put my head through the wall!

It's funny, in the CD booklet that comes with a recent reissue of all their work, the guitar player (I really should have checked his name before posting this!) mentioned how it used to annoy him (or disappoint him, can't recall the exact detail) that people used to praise how good the improvisations were on it, because he said NONE of it was improvised, every bit of it was carefully written and rehearsed! So never does it sound like aimless jamming to me. In comparison, something like the first Mahavishnu Orchestra I find quite unengaging for the same reason you stated above, even though it's well played.

OK, rambling, hope there's some sense in there!

^ I agree wholeheartedly as Van Nimwegan's compositions are all beautifully constructed and paced throughout and never betray their origins as conceived on guitar i.e Jan is a composer who plays guitar, not a composer of
guitar music, and it is not inconceivable that these pieces could be arranged quite satisfactorily
for any number of rock, jazz or orchestral forces such is their strength and durability. The motifs and themes employed all have a beginning, development and conclusion, with the various transitions from one section to the next all seamlessly negotiated. We always get the impression that, unlike some other pseudo Prog, these are not little unrelated instrumental passages glued together by a skilled but unscrupulous arranger.
