Ah come on!! It's all about the diversity baby! Also Tom. I haven't got into Djent Karet yet. I know they are quite relevant offering interesting hits of math rock and perhaps some Magma type flare? Anyhow. Gotta get on it soon I know. :) In the meantime, keep enjoying Meshuggha. And the last track off the Koloss album is just so unexpected, but works for a great ending. I know it through our good friend Audun (the bearded bard) for a loop as well.
Well, Cinnamon Road is sort of related to Midnight In Tula (from White Eagle). Light, synth-pop sensibilities, not what you expect after so many lengthy epic pieces from TD. However, the more involved pieces more than make up for some 'light relief'. Love 80's TD no-end (at least up to Optical Race). Meshuggah - so, I spotted the 'Special Edition' 'I' vinyl release whilst on holiday in the States, (The New Orleans stint of our itinerary in January this year) and all I knew was that they were on P.A. as a Tech Metal band. Never bothered to read a review, never knew they had a Growler vocalist. Just saw 'I' was a sidelong piece and I was sold. When I got home, I spun it - DEATH GROWL WTF ?? I took it track by track, just shaking my head - love the music, love the complexity, LOVE the crunching bass. DEATH GROWL vocals...........I just wanted to die......... So, I put up an attempt at a review, and the LP stayed in the crate until the last few weeks when I decided to just crank it up and just do it. Boy, it was tough, but I've come around, watched lots of footage, interviews and such - yep, WICKED band, can tolerate the 'growl', and I think Jens pulls it off very well. This stuff is a cut above your 'regular' Death Metal. These guys kick severe ass, and I did find a relation within their music to Magma (De Futura being the main composition which came to mind), so, now I am really digging these guys, and really lapping it up. I hope I can twist someone's arms here to get me the vinyl Koloss for Christmas. That would be INSANE !! I've looked into Gojira and Dillinger Escape Plan but they don't measure up to Meshuggah. And I still have plenty of Kajagoogoo to run back to if my head caves in . I would be the sort of guy to rock up at a Meshuggah gig wearing my 'Goo T-Shirt (probably asking to get my head kicked in but somehow I'd talk myself out of it.....)
Meshuggha really do kind of invoke a certain kind of fan-base for sure. I think the only thing that would save me going to a Meshuggha concert is my beard. Anyhow, the process or adaptability you've gone through to really appreciate an extreme taste or side of music is quite amazing. It's very open minded and you now have more sonic treats to enjoy. I underwent a similar experince with Agalloch. John hiam's death growls took some getting used to at first, but like you I realize that is totally necessary with the style of music at hand. Given your tolerances to Meshuggha I think you would find AGALLOCH's Ashes against the grain a walk in the park, especially since there is the Opeth factor of a mix of clean and death growl vocals....or vockills I should say. :) Anyhow, as a friend, I would really recommend that album to you. I really think you'll enjoy it.

Tangerine dream-- Logos (live) -- what a great album to wake up to. I just love the 17min mark of logos pt2. So beautiful. Tangerine dream-- hyperborea ( title track still remains my favourite TD track of all time. This album still hasn't lost its effect on me. ) Anekdoten-- until the ghosts are gone. ( this album is really something. Lots of detail. Love the dual TRON sound. :) Devin Townsend--- z2 ( dark matters)-- probably will buy the the live at the royal Albert hall set. How could I not? What a great artist. :) Porcupine tree-- light bulb sun (24/48k LPCM)-- killer recording!!! Chroma key-- you go now. ( mr. Moore is back at it!! Started a patreon campaign and has already reached his fund goals to record a new chroma key album. First in 10 yrs!
What I really admire about the Meshuggah boys is that they are all about the music, delivering 100 per-cent in performance, and they don't come across as nasty, feral drug fiends like many in this scene. And they have a sense of humour, it's not all about darkness. I wouldn't even class them anywhere near Death-Metal. Tech/Extreme is just bang-on. I'll check the Agolloch out, how could I not after your sincere recommendation ?? Thanks . The funny thing is, I've avoided many Opeth albums coz of Growls. I only have the clean vocal ones...... And I just woke up, and the first tune I've got going on the TT - Dancers To A Discordant System. This is just amazing. The way the bass drums lock in with the bass is just magical. Haake is mind-blowing. Jannik Top would be so proud of Dick Lovgren
Ah you woke up to Meshuggha?! Now you definitely have to accept my Agalloch invitation....and yes it was very sincere. . Also, by any chance did you pick up the cd edition with the expanded -banned artwork for the ObZen album? Grueling...and ouch!! .

Dude ! (if I may call you that....?) - I skipped through the Agalloch, yes it's very good, atmospheric and 'getting there', I do wish it had a vinyl release (I am unaware if there is......) but I know there are approximately 3244 CD releases I wish to get my mangled head around, but I limit my restricted absorberence to vinyl things........ Having said that, I am now expecting the White vinyl version of Koloss in Santa's sleigh - along with a Koloss T-Shirt........such is the bandwagon I'm jumping on........... Everyone around me claims that Peter Hammill presents a more 'twisted and obscure' take on music............ I'm sure PH invented the 'growl' vocal style when he sung the line 'box press the dreams' in Lemmings (Pawn Hearts). The music of Meshuggah has a similar philosophy as that of Magma. I can only tolerate the 'death growl' (it really is beyond savage) - but the music is too good to ignore. Truth is, I can crank up Anekdoten, Wobbler, even Yes or Genesis, and it is all a ' bombardment of heavy sound' to my Dad. He did enjoy Dick Lovgren's demonstration of a looping pedal though..........(Dick played in a more fusion/jazz-improv styling here) so he takes this Death Growl metal style with a pinch of salt -he's 79 and has been subjected to Hammill, Magma and many Zeuhl and R.I.O. bands for 25+ years - I love my Dad..........

Yellow Magic Orchestra were a baffling Japanese electronic/synth-pop/New Wave group, put out a pretty cool debut in 1978, even if you'd be hard pressed to call it a very `proggy' electronic release!
But it's really rather good, if a little dated, but not much sounded like it at the time!
Hah, care to put it on one or your `Classic Electronic' polls?!

I suppose I could have the 'dude' moniker cause I'm into the whole brevity thing. So, that's one wacky papi you must have made your dad into. ;) My dad doesn't have much interest in my music cause he's a top 40 guy these days. Anyhow, peter Hammil inventing the death growl? Interesting thought my friend. Some of the earliest guttural vocals I think was found on pawn hearts. Bauhaus was an early creep show as well. ;) Glad you liked Ashes against the grain. It's really one of my favourites. I always come back to it and 'unlike the waves' is just hauntingly epic. ;) Oh and nice Christmas haul! I got myself a RUSH t-shirt to go with an extra 9 more albums/box sets I purchased this week. What a great Canadian stereotype I am. Oh and I understand about your affinity towards vinyl. God! How could I not. Enjoy man. Hope you'll stroll into work wearing that freakin t-shirt. What a gas that would be!
