Devin Townsend project--Z2 ( still can't stop marching with the poozers.;) WinterSun-- Time I Eldritch Dark--Blood Ceremonies Star 1-- Victims of the Modern age ( absolutely love this album. Some of A.L's best work. Damian Wilson kills on this one too!) Zombi--Spirit Animal Tormandany--Resident Evil 4 motion picture soundtrack. ( some great bass work on this score and I was amazed to discover it was done by Wes Borland formerly of Limp Bizkit. Lol) Front line Assembly--Millennium The Nephilim--Zoon Eloy--Reincarnation live on stage ( both discs)

^ Force Majeure is really awesome, I still don't have it in my collection though Rites at Dawn bugs me because it sounds too much like Yes, but I'll have to listen to it more to see if it changes.

Raven-Steven Wilson Greenslade and Bedside Manners Are Extra... 2 on one cd I picked up a used copy of Force Majeure .....I have to say I'm a little disappointed. Regarding Wobbler-Rites At Dawn-,.... also one of my favorites in the last few years. I could care less if it 'sounds like Yes'.....imho Yes hasn't done anything this good in over 35 years.

^ What do you think is disappointing about Force Majeure? I normally don't care either, I was probably not in the most accepting mood when I listened to it. First listen opinions always change right?

I laughed when i saw someone here refer to it as 'overrated'
when that album came out there was nothing like it ...it was mind blowing. | The one who called it 'overrated' could've been me LOL although I don't think I've made such a comment recently.
What I don't get is the "you had to have been there when it was released to understand its brilliance" part. How does this compare to the characteristics it gets as being a timeles classic? I'm not saying it hasn't aged well. I "wasn't there", so I can't compare how it sounded then to how it sounds now, but for me it doesn't sound dated in any way. I just don't think it adds up, the "you had to have been there" part. I'm sure it helps to appreciate it, but it shouldn't matter if you heard it for the first time in '73 or in '15, should it, I mean, if it really is the timeless classic it's made out to be?
| I think 'you had to be there" is too simplistic ..
I'm saying that I bought it - put it on, and was blown away. It left an impression that hasn't lessened in time for me.. It's still as hard hitting and relevant to me now as it was then ...
it just doesn't feel like - 'you had to be there' to me
I think there are lesser works that might sound better now because of the memories associated with the first exposure - but I still think Dark Side is a timeless classic in every sense of the phrase
|
Sorry for the late reply, didn't see it before now.
"You had to be there", too simplistic? Yeah, it was a bit toungue in cheek, but it has never grabbed me, in any way, that's what I'm trying to say.
Listened to it again recently, and I still can't hear what's supposedly so great about it.

DTOTM dated? I feel it's a relevant piece of work to this day, both lyrically and musically! I just don't get the negativity this album gets from some people. |
I didn't say that. I said "I'm not saying it hasn't aged well". So, quite the opposite actually.

Missed this one, Sam. Saw it just now, trying to find out when I listened to those albums last.
The José Cid one I like a lot. It reminds me of DSotM some, something about the vocals, but it's better than Dark Side, IMO. Btw, I have a Portuguese colleague, who's a drummer and a Genesis fan. When I told him I'd got that Cid album and asked if he'd heard about him, he told me he actually knew the guy. Small world, ha?
Those other two, the Solaris one I think I've seen you listened to since that post, right? The Gotic one is one of my favourite albums. Slightly jazzy instrumental album with some lovely keyboards and Camel-like flute. Highly recommended!

Tonight's selections: Ainur – The Lost Tales Anathema – A Natural Disaster Ave Rock - Espacious Black Widow – Return to the Sabbat Synergy – Electronic Realizations for Rock Orchestra Beth Orton – Sugaring Season – a very confident album from folkie miss Orton, but damn there is sometimes a fine line between a world-weary raspy drawl and incomprehensible mumbling...

I never associated that album with DSOTM, but it's way more spacey than DSOTM Does your copy has the amazing EP 'Vida (Sons do Quotidiano)' as a bonus track? I've been liking it so much since I saw his Prog concert last year, it was the opening track, so good Portuguese representation in Norway? Cool! It doesn't surprise me much, he was and is so popular around here (not for his Prog work unfortunately) that he knows and has worked with so many people here. I don't personally know him but I know many musicians who played with him.
Yeah, I listened to some of their albums, but their first one is the only one that I really liked. I still didn't listen to the new one though. I completely forgot about Gotic, I noted the name so I won't forget about it again

I had the list written down, obviously. No way I had all that in my head, I'm not that much of a genius (not by a long shot).
No, I only have the seven original tracks on my 10.000 Anos... CD. No bonus track, sadly.
Yeah, my colleague told me JC was popular in Portugal, and that he had done a lot of stuff, even participated in the Eurovision Song Contest.
I haven't heard anything from Solaris but their first album myself. Really should check out their other albums, especially MK II, which is getting some good reviews.
Hope you enjoy Escenes, when you get a chance to listen to it. As I said, it's a favourite of mine.
Anyway, today's choices:
Astrid Pröll - s/t (my first listen to this Puerto Rican band, nice stuff, reminded me a bit of DT, which was my next listen, as you can see ) Devin Townsend - Terria tr-Ond and the Suburban Savages - s/t (my first listen to this also, a Panzerpappa/The Samuel Jackson 5 offshoot band with one album to their name, not unlike Panzerpappa sounding, a bit more straight forward perhaps, but I enjoyed it)

Since you do band marathons, something I never felt like doing, I thought you memorized Mine doesn't have it either but thankfully I can listen to it on Youtube.
Yes, with a disco pop track in 1980 when the contest wasn't the freak show it is now. He didn't win but got in second place, the best Portuguese performance on the contest.
I don't feel like returning to Solaris' second album I should listen to the next two though.
I'll let you know when I do
