Topic: Gordon Giltrap Posted: February 07 2004 at 10:39 |
To my mind, Giltrap has recorded some truly progressive albums : Visionary, The peacock party (feat. Ian Mosley, Morris Pert, Richard Harvey of Gryphon fame, John G. Perry who played with Anrthony Phillips) : a true sympho-prog masterpiece. Check out his discography and try to add his records in the progarchives discography.

Hi:
If you like Gordon Giltrap, I recommend you seek Paul Brett's "Eclipse" or "Interlife". None of them are great, but both have some good moments and I find some similarities with Giltrap, especially in the first one (the title track is excellent, by the way, although the rest of the LP is not up to it). I think they are not in CD, and I got mine in a second hand lp shop.
Regards

Symphonic would be fitting for him. He is a bit too polished for my taste, but that does not speak against his addition. I see some similarities with Andreas Vollenweider, by the way, although they play different instruments.

Indeed, the same kind of ultra-polished music!

I see him more as PR than as Symphonic, if any, he was already rejected and I agree with that, I don't believe he belongs here.
His music is a crossing between Classical (Neo Classical not Symphonic), Folk (Not Folk Prog, pure Folk), Pop, New Age (Polished New Age, but New Age) and Rock.
Please, tehere are lots of musicians who played Classical without the need to be Symphonic.
I will discuss it with the team anyway.

His own site gives us a hint:
Gordon's music continues to evade categorisation, influenced as it is by the rock guitar of Hank Marvin and Pete Townshend, the folk guitar of Bert Jansch and John Renbourn, and the classical guitar of Julian Bream and John Williams. He has released 25 original studio albums, plus numerous live albums and compilations.
|
Many sites consider him as New Age:
Giltrap composes lilting, shimmering new age music that employs acoustic guitar and synths. The synths lay down a soft bed of angelic sounds, occasionally emulating string and wind instruments, while he crafts lovely and technically impressive guitar figures above.

Wouldn't be against his inclusion in PR or maybe even Crossover, but not Symphnic, anyway, the team must say not me alone.

Should I ask the Admin team to consider him for PR Hugues?

Fine with me!!
Ivàn made his point and I wasn't far from thinking the same!!
He's one of these cgaracters that belongs in Prog Related, just by whom he played with
(like Roy Harper and his prog connections, for example, but I think RH is much proggier)

Looking for someone to write up Giltrap's bio and eventually work on the album inclusions.
Thanks
