I rater don't have their favoutire era. I think they had outstanding works in each era (except for late 80's), but unfortunately some letdowns as well.
This night wounds time.

Alright - I love everything about Caress - but I never got into 2112 !!! The debut was very embryonic and derivative, with Fly By Night heading in the right direction.  Signals and Grace were fairly decent, but then afterwards their albums only had some good tracks for me.  I stopped with Rush around Counterparts............Am I missing out on something ???

^You're missing out on their best album, Vapor Trails.  The rest of their post-Counterparts material is quite good as well; Snakes and Arrows and Clockwork Angels were both very solid, and it's been a while since I've listened to Test for Echo but I remember it as a good album (it has "Driven" and "Time and Motion," after all!"

I thought Hold Your Fire was ultra commercial...........Power Windows is pretty good - it has Marathon - top tune, that one.  Presto & Roll The Bones did absolutely sausage for me..........no zodiacs, or almanacs, no maniacs in polyester slacks, you dig....................NOT AT ALL.........Angry

That's all well and good, but at the time of release, when I heard that, my respect for Rupert Hine and Rush went out the window - I was truly in shock, regardless of their intentions - rap and Rush just don't sit well with me at all....................

That one doesn't do much for me, though in the piece's defense, it's nowhere near as heinous as its detractors make it out to be. Come to think of it, I don't think Rush ever made a truly terrible number from their 1975 - 1982 period.

Cygnus X-1 is extremely silly, but I won't deny a certain entertainment factor. I also really like the title track from that album.

Caress of Steel < - - - > Permanent Waves

I am just a sucker for the long-form piece - be it 'Fountain of Lamneth' or 'Natural Science'

Once there are four separate songs on each side of the album and no one larger composition - we lose something that only a few groups can really pull off - of course they free to grow and change - and remain a top live group in any genre.

Everything until Permanent Waves. After that, they still did some very good music at times, but it's less my cup of tea.

A Farewell to Kings remains my favourite Rush album

2112 through Power Windows was their peak, IMO, but they have had several great albums since (Counterparts and Clockwork Angels).

Early to mid 80's plus
Mid 80's to late 80's

That's not to say I don't like mateiral from other eras (I do) but I tend to gravitate toward Power Windows, Grace Under Pressure, Hold Your Fire, and Presto albums.

The exception to the statement above is Clockwork Angels which I think is among the best music they've ever produced.  Not only are the songs good but Alex's solos (especially on The Garden) are killer.
