Yeah, it's been done so many times before. However, it's been a while since it's been done, and we might just as well see which are the new results, though it's certain to be very close once again. I guess we just have to resign ourselves to the fact that this poll (and other similar ones) will keep appearing from time to time, so I guess it's rather useless to complain so much about it. However, as far as I'm concerned, I go with Yes, once again.

No, we don't have to. The older polls probably just shouldn't be locked. We can keep doing this over and over and over, but to what end?

We have threads with ideas recycled from threads with ideas recycled from threads ... don't you find it a little unnecessary? Not to mention that the links pointing to those threads keep pushing out the links to other, possibly a little more original threads in the recent posts list at the bottom of the forum home page.

Sorry to be so crude, but I don't kbnow which bands you heard, the situation is exactly the opposite:
  1. Trespass
  2. Nursery Cryme
  3. Foxtrot
  4. Selling England
  5. The Lamb
  6. ATOTT
  7. W&W
5 Flawless masterpieces in a row
2 Excellent albums

Genesis is based mostly in the composition, few solos, the music is wghat placed them where they are
Yes is based in the performance

Genesis by far are better composers.

Yes is a collection of virtuoso musicians with 2 masterpieces and a few good albums.

Iván

It seems to me that the reappearance of such polls shows 1) New people join our community and have the same or similar questions to those already involved, and 2) Such artists are extremely important (and popular) to our favorite musical genre.  And since both Yes and Genesis are instrumental (heh) in the development of Prog, their influence will not likely diminish.  Does it get tedious for those of us who have been around a while?  Sure it does.  But how many of us were once bold enough to raise a question or topic without knowing how often it has been done before?  Most of us are willing to learn the ropes and learn from our mistakes.  As new people join, this is bound to happen again.  Besides, we don't have to participate if we don't want to.
The world of sound is certainly capable of infinite variety and, were our sense developed, of infinite extensions. -- George Santayana, "The Sense of Beauty"

I remember last time I made a complicated calculation by giving all albums of both bands points, taking into account all kinds of criteria, adding the points and looked in the end who won. Genesis won by a hair. Smile

I know this forum has been closed to the vote, but...This is close, but as others have said, I think that Genesis are better composers.  I like the way Tony Banks does his keyboards as an integral part of the song as opposed to Kaye/Wakeman/Moraz/etc. did the solos thing...not that I dont' like those guys...I do, but Banks seems more integral to the sound.Cool

Ivan, as much as I love Genesis, Yes also has great composers and compositions listen to Roundabout, South Side Of The Sky and Heart of The Sunrise, Right now I might be leaning towards Yes Shocked I mean where was Genesis when Yes released The Ladder(check that one out)??? which to me is far superior to anything Genesis did after Duke. These are Yes masterpieces in my opinion:

1.The Yes Album
2.Fragile
3.Close To The Edge
4.Tales From Topographic Oceans
5. Relayer
6. Going For The One

Yes was able to bring in more influences, more classical(Cans and Brahms), experimental(Sound Chaser) world influence(Can I?) did Genesis do any of this??

Oh my goodness, how do I pick between these two? I voted Yes but I could have easily voted Genesis.

From the discography of both bands, the only albums I absolutley like from beginning to end are Fragile and CttE. Genesis usually has at least one, if not several songs I find very annoying.

I'm inclined to agree with the sentiment here. Although Yes also contained members with compositional brilliance, Genesis wins out in my opinion. Their group dynamic was so much more focused and still contained an appropriate amount of virtuosity without unbalancing each track, a feat difficult to do when the artistic direction of their finest albums was largely determined by a band leader, particularly on Lamb. In the spectrum of my favorite bands, Genesis ranks third. Yes has two albums I really like, one I'm fond of when I'm in the right mood, and one of the most grotesquely overrated albums in all of prog in my opinion (Fragile). I realize I'm pissing people off by saying that, but Heart of the Sunrise is the only track on there I haven't gotten bored with after only owning the album for about 2 1/2 years. Yes's sound sort of clicked with me to varying degrees with different albums, but I much prefer other bands. If I could vote, I'd be splitting the tie in favor of Genesis, a group that captivated me upon my first listen and continues to dazzle me with each repeated listen of their albums.

I love both bands but after 1977 Yes takes the lead and doesn't look back. Seriously, I just think Yes later output is more consistent and that's a big reason. Supper's Ready is the best prog track ever though.

Genesis were my first and greatest love in progressive rock. I read everything about them I could get my hands on, watched every documentary I could find, and played their music constantly.

Since I became serious about recording my own music, though, I've been listening to a lot more Yes. Last year I realised I was hardly playing Genesis any more, just the occasional spin of A Trick of the Tail and of The Lamb from Lilywhite Lilith onwards. On the other hand, Close to the Edge, Tales from Topographic Oceans, Going for the One, Tormato and Yesshows are continually before me. I think that's a sign of having crossed over into Yes territory: when Tormato gets played and Foxtrot does not.
