Ayreon and Phideaux, two great artist actually very up on my preferences.
Even if they are listed in two different sub-genres, they look very similiar to me. Two one man band, and two genius able to convey their creativity on several masterpiece, and able to coordinate the support of several guest artist into the same. Melodic and powerful at the same time they have on my opinion both strong roots in the most classic Prog, and attention to the new sound offered at present too. Which one take your favour? |

I like Snowtorch enough to vote for Phideaux.

I like both artists quite a bit, but I have to give the edge here to Phideaux. In fact, I would consider Phideaux to be one of my top five modern prog artists.

Definately Phideaux for me. The guy is a hugely charismatic singer as well as a true musical talent, and especially `Snowtorch' displayed so much melodic skill. I've never had so many people asking me at worjk what I was listening to, and that it sounded `really good'! That has NEVER happened with my prog listening choices in the office!
Although I've got `Actual Fantasy Revisited' and quite enjoy it, and I admire the grand status Lucassen (spelling?) brings to the prog rock genre (plus he's incredible talented) I really don't enjoy the Ayreon albums very much. Far too overblown with not a trace of subtlety, sheer overkill in every department. Having said that, I LOVED Lucassen's recent solo album `Lost In The New Real' which, like `Snowtorch', was highly melodic, catchy and memorable while still providing the prog thrills. Plus the guy himself has a wonderful voice, I'd much rather him sing than bring in all his guests. Easily one of my favourites of 2012! |

Have you ever listened "Human Equation" and "01011001"? Also his last solo album and the Ambeon parallel project are very interesting, expecially Cold Metal within "for Aereonauts only" is an excellent song. If you haven't yet, just give a try... |

Never too late, Phideaux is an amazing artist with several mastertpieces on his back, indeed. Start from the last, and the most proggie "Snowtorch", or "Doomsday Afternoon" with the amazing "Microdeath Sofstar", both amazing indeed! Or if you don't want running on empty, visit his webpage: http://www.bloodfish.com/downloads.htm for a selection of best songs from his album, free to dowload in MP3. A great artist and a very generous one too! |

Again a tough choice. I have two albums by Phideaux which I really like but for some reason I couldn't get into Number Seven . My history with Ayreon goes way back and although I agree with Mr. Aussie Byrd about their sound, which is rough around the edges and is the opposite of that 70's warm sound, I still have to vote for them. I really enjoy most of their albums very much and I think I may also be the only one who thinks their debut is their best.

There is hardly a better album than Phideaux's last three.

I really dig both artists, but my first taste of Phideaux was Snowtorch, and that was more than enough to draw me in. Ayreon is really good, and I got started with their good stuff (Into the Electric Castle), but Phideaux wins easily.
I find it interesting that these two are in competition when Phideaux Xavier did vocals on 0101101, which was Ayreon's last album... |

Phideaux seems to me fabricated attempt to do prog, no inspiration. Ayreon on the other hand created several masterpieces, among the best - Final fantasy, Into the Electric Castle, Dream Sequencer.

I like both quite a bit, but The Human Equation gives the edge to Ayreon for me.
