John Petrucci posted some pics. DT entered the studio earlier this week, with new drummer Mike Mangini, to record their anticipated follow-up to A Dramatic Turn of Events, due out in late-summer or early fall 2013. This will be the first album the band will write / have written with a new drummer.

My expectations aren't very high after the last album.

It didn't seem very obvious to me, nor most people. I'll admit it was a safe album, to prove that the band could continue without Portnoy, but some of the music on ADTOE is some of the most exciting since Octavarium the song, or Six Degrees. However, Mangini will have some influence on the music this time, so I'm intrigued.

I think it is very obvious that if I say my expectations aren't high after the last album then i think that album is bad. Simple English.

You may disagree but you'd be wrong.

I was taking the "obviously" comment and turning it around. You might have thought the album was good, but disappointing. I didn't know you thought it was bad, which I wouldn't call it.

Why do you insist on using such language?  Why can't you just say something like "it didn't meet my preferences" or simply "I didn't like it"?

Says the one who bashes every band that's not vanila prog metal.

Anyway, I'm excited, I just hope they do something that's not the same thing they've done for the past 3 albums.

Well, because when something gets obvious, there's no use in hiding truth beneath hypocrite word constructions.

I'd say the last album was a step away from what they had been doing the previous two albums. I think DT12 will find the band really letting loose.

I have a strange feeling that the new album will be a concept album

Yeah, it's obvious the album sucks...which is why it earned the second highest number of votes for best album of the year on seaoftranquility.org...oh wait...I guess it's not obvious.  I guess some people are just sour grapes....

So, the last album, ADTOE, was written with Mike Portnoy? Is he credited with any of the songs on the album even though he obviously didn't play on it?

No, ADTOE was completely sans-Portnoy.

If you are referring to what I said in the original post, I said that DT12 would be the first album the band records WITH Mike Mangini. On the last album, Mangini wasn't there during the writing sessions, and only came into the studio to record his parts. This time, he's there from the get-go, involved in the creative process as well as the recording process WITH the band.

ADTOE was probably one of the best albums the band has produced throughout their career. It ranks highly with Train of Thought, Systematic Chaos, and Scenes Pt: 2. I only imagine Mangini can add to the whole musical experience that is Dream Theater!
