Been listening rather a lot lately to a Camel song I found on youtube ...

Apparently it was recorded by the classic line-up when they were debating a follow-up to Mirage. They eventually went with Snow Goose and this song was dropped only to re-surface nearly 30 years later on a DVD retrospective.

Does anyone know if that story is true?

Yes, I believe it is. I think they receorded 'Autumn' at the same time. They were going to record an album based on 'Siddhartha' by Hermann Hesse but then scrapped it and decided on the Snow Goose instead.

Thanks Kirillov. Found a promo post on camel productions online which also supports this story. I guess I found it hard to believe that such a wonderful song remained hidden for so long! Autumn is quite nice, but Riverman is a real dream for a Camel fan. Smile

Well, what actually happened was that they had decided to do a concept album.  Bardens picked Siddhartha as the subject, and Latimer picked The Snow Goose.  The other two members preferred Latimer's pick, so Bardens got outvoted.  Latimer and Bardens then went "to the country" to write the album in seclusion.  So they never actually started a Siddhartha based album.

They wrote and recorded 2 songs, though!
 
And beautiful they are, too.

Autumn(1974) and Riverman(1975) would have been better than half the tracks on the Mirage and Snowgoose albums if they were part of the albums

Two beautiful songs indeed but I wouldn't say it's better than anything on Mirage.

Well it was definitely my favourite Camel period. I happen to think that Mirage is Camel's crowning glory, but don't have the same fondness for The Snow Goose that many have. Certainly River Man would have been a standout track on Raindances, Moonmadness or Breathless.
