I always wondered where Al ---an Italian boy from New Jersey---got his Latin chops---I mean he went to music school in Boston----not too Latin eitherSmile But his playing is sublime.

Interesting poll.  I think that I would probably have to choose Santana as my favorite between the two based on being more familiar with him, but I've enjoyed the Al Di Meola albums that I have and recently purchased a couple of more of them.  I'm not familiar with Return to Forever though, so my mind could change once I get around to checking them out.

Have to agree as well. Al was always more diverse in his playing anyway, even compared to Carlos in the 70s.

Rushfan Hughmmm I never bought any RTF, I wasn't keen on them Unhappy first 4 or 5 Al albums are the best ones for me, not the recent ones. Some prefer the recent ones but it's different music.   Elegant Gypsy and Casino are favorites of mine. Also he was with Stomu Yamashta on the album "Go" in the late 70's. Friday Night in San Francisco too Thumbs Up

Return to Forever's "Romantic Warrior" was the first prog album I ever got into, so it has a special place in my heart. From a production standpoint, I think it's one of the best sounding albums from the 70s, regardless of genre, and the music kicks ass.

Try RTF's "Returns" (2009) album. Some great renditions of classic tunes, with some great improvisation.

I bought a couple of RTF vinyls a little while back.  I just haven't listened to them yet.  I actually have a few Chick Corea albums too.  My favorite Al di Meola might be World Sinfonia II, which happened to be the first one of his that I bought.  Elegant Gypsy, Splendindo Hotel and Casino are all great too.  I also have Land Of The Midnight Sun, Orange and Blue, Scenario, and Tirami Su.  I've just not listened to many of these all that frequently.  Splendido Hotel, Casino, and Land of the Midnight Sun are all recent purchases.
