I have found some similarities between the guitar styles of Santana and Akkerman.  This poll is inspired by the earlier one posted by Kati with Santana and Al di Meola.  So which is  your favorite?

They're both fantastic, but I marginally prefer Akkerman.

I'm curious as to what you mean by "similarities" between the two. In style or sound or technical skill or age or output or hair color? I can't think of ANY similarities (except the age-thing).

Jan by far. The guy is like one of the very first shredders - check out his licks on the famous live version of Hocus Pocus - tasty. Cool Santana's alright, never really got too much out of him. I really liked his work with John McLaughlin though.

Voted Santana in the previous poll but here I'm going with Akkerman. Oh how he shines in Eruption.

Jan---although his later work seems a little one dimensional to me.

I'm thinking mostly of the songs Anonymous and Tommy, which is a section from Eruption.  I have only just come to know these pieces and they remind a lot of Santana.  There are a couple of other places in other songs, but I cannot recall exactly which right now, where I also hear some similarity, but not as much.  They both are mostly known as rockers, but have also embraced Jazz/Rock Fusion.

For myself, I am voting Akkerman because I find more dimension  and diversity in his work, both as a solo artist and with Focus.

Pff, two of the very best but Akkerman in his prime was devastating, fast, expressive, raw and delirious.
Carlos , well, is Carlos, a one of a kind axeman .

The Dutch guy today !

Akkerman by a country mile. I've never liked Santana's style.

Jan Akkerman by far. The only one who could rival him as my favorite guitar player would be Steve Howe.
I'm not into Santana's playing at all, but that's personal taste, I admit. I'm sure Santana is very skilled.

Both are very excellent guitarists. I voted for Akkerman because he's a Prog musician and more of an influence on me. I still love Focus. Santana commands respect though.

I was just playing Moving Waves.  When Tommy started, I asked the missus who the guitarist was.  She guessed Santana.  In fact, last week when I was playing it earlier, she asked if it was Santana. Of course it was Akkerman.
